The rise of darts in the UK over the past couple of years has been astonishing, with a host of new people taking it up.

Of course, that means that you need to know how far away to stand and how high the board needs to be if you are to re-create Luke Littler‘s heroics.

You have to stand at an exact distance from the board, while there is also a specific height.

If either of these are off, you aren’t playing the same game as the professionals.

So, as we gear up for the 2025 World Darts Championship final between Littler and Michael van Gerwen, talkSPORT.com has had a look into what you need to do to play darts properly.

How far do you stand away from a dart board?

First of all, if you are setting up at home, you need to be in a big enough space that is comfortable.

The room should ideally be five feet by 11 feet with extra lighting where possible to ensure the best possible experience.

The official distance from the oche [toe line] to the dartboard is 237cm.

This works out at 7 feet 9.25 inches.

These are the measurements that all professional darts matches are played to.

However, there can be variations.

For example, if you use an electric dart board, known as a soft-tip dart board, the distance is slightly longer.

If playing with a soft-tip dart board, you must stand 244cm away, which is eight feet.

How high is the dart board?

Again, as with the distance, there is a specific height for the dart board.

If you want to re-create a professional scenario, the height has to be 173cm [5ft 8] from the bullseye to the floor.

That is the exact centre of the board, and that is how you measure the height.

As long as the bull is that distance from the floor, it’s the correct height.

If you want to play accessible darts for players in wheelchairs, the height is lowered to 137cm [4ft 6].

The distance for accessible darts remains the same, but the board is slightly lowered to accommodate.

Soft-tip darts is the exact same height as steel-tip darts.
