‘I can have a year like Scottie’ – Win drought no concern for former world No1 as he makes bold prediction

Justin Thomas has gone over two years without a PGA Tour victory, but he’s confident that will change in 2025.

The former world No.1 is eyeing a career-best year, and will tee off in the season-opening event, The Sentry at Kapalua, on Thursday.

Despite not clinching a win since his 2022 PGA Championship victory at Southern Hills, Thomas believes he can mirror the spectacular recent form of Scottie Scheffler.

“I still fully believe that I can have a year like Scottie just had,” he told reporters ahead of The Sentry.

“I think I would be doing myself a disservice if I didn’t think I could at least do that. I have a lot of faith and capability in my game, and I feel like I’m working on the right things.”

Out of the 20 events he played in 2024, Thomas made the top 10 on six occasions.

His highlights included a third-place finish at The American Express last January and a near miss at the Zozo Championship in the fall, where he finished second.

Scheffler, meanwhile, dominated.

The world No.1 won seven times in 2024, including at The Masters, The Players and the Tour Championship.

But, having made a big statement ahead of the season-opener, Thomas will be hoping to find his form of eight years ago.

The Kentucky-native’s best year in terms of wins was back 2017, when he captured five events, including his first major trophy at the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow.

Ahead of The Sentry, which Thomas has already won twice, he admitted that he took his success for granted all those years ago.

“I underappreciated (winning) then, for sure,” he said.

“I truly felt like I was going to win multiple times every season pretty much, until I lost it a little bit.

“It’s just so hard to win out here. Naturally, the better player that you are, you can get away with more mistakes, but come the end of the week on Sunday, you have to win the golf tournament.”

While PGA Tour success is on Thomas’ radar for 2025, he also has his sights set on the Ryder Cup, having missed out on selection for the US team that competed in the Presidents Cup last September.

And he will be looking to channel some of that frustration into his performances moving forward.

“I haven’t had the opportunity to play p***ed off for a while, so I’m pretty excited to play a little p***ed off this year,” Thomas admitted.

Only time will tell how the season will turn out for Thomas, who at 31 is entering his 10th year on Tour.

But having failed to win an event since the spring of 2022, he will feel any success is long overdue.

Thomas has been grouped alongside Hideki Matsuyama and Adam Scott for the opening two rounds of The Sentry.

talkSPORT 2 will have live coverage of the action from The Plantation Course throughout the week.
