Katie Taylor admits she is worried for Mike Tyson as he gears up to face Jake Paul.
‘Iron Mike’ returns to the ring on November 15 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas in a professional heavyweight clash.
Tyson recently celebrated his 58th birthday and hasn’t fought in the paid ranks since being retired on his stool by Kevin McBride in 2005.
Paul, on the other hand, is in his physical prime at 27 and has been actively competing in professional boxing for the last five years.
Taylor, who faces Amanda Serrano in the co-main event of the evening, grew up watching Tyson and like so many boxers he has inspired, she doesn’t want to see him get beaten up by Paul.
“Yeah, there are obviously concerns there,” the undisputed super lightweight queen told talkSPORT.com. “I don’t want to see him getting hurt.
“As an icon of the sport, I have so much respect for Mike Tyson as a fighter and what he has done for the sport.
“He’s in there against a real young, fresh guy in Jake Paul and he’s a good athlete as well.
“But Mike Tyson seems to be very confident in himself. He seems to be putting the work in and training hard so I hope he comes out on top.
“But we will see what happens. That is what makes this such an amazing spectacle, you don’t know what is going to happen in this fight so everybody is going to be tuning in and it’s going to be very interesting.”
Asked who she expects to get their hand raised, Taylor replied: “I don’t know, I really hope Mike Tyson pulls it off but Jake Paul is a young man, he is fresh, he’s a good athlete, he seems to punch ok so I have no idea.
“But, then again, I don’t know how good Jake Paul takes a shot, I don’t know how good his chin is.
“Mike Tyson can catch anyone with a good shot so it’s going to be very interesting. I’m obviously rooting for Mike Tyson.”
Regardless of what happens in the main event, it is sure to be a good night for Taylor and Serrano.
Both women are projected to earn money-spinning paydays of $6million plus for their much-anticipated rematch while their inclusion on the Paul vs Tyson card means it will be the most-watched women’s boxing fight of all time.
Taylor never imagined she would be in this position eight years ago when she sent a message to Eddie Hearn on social media, asking for a meeting to discuss the possibility of her turning over with Matchroom Boxing.
“When I first sent Eddie Hearn that DM a few years ago, I never thought in a million years I’d be in this position where I’m getting ready for another huge night,” she added.
“It’s been an amazing journey over these last eight years. Having a chance to fight at Madison Square Gardens, having a chance to headline back home in Ireland and having an opportunity to fight on these huge cards.
“And that all leads up to this moment where I’m fighting on a Mike Tyson undercard.
“This is unbelievable, never in a million years did I think I would be sharing a card with such an icon and a legend of the sport.
“Every single person in boxing looks up to Mike Tyson and now I get the opportunity to rub shoulders with him, this is unbelievable.”
Taylor and Serrano’s inaugural encounter was an absolute barnburner from start to finish and received widespread acclaim from fans and media alike.
In the end, Taylor was given the nod via split decision and they are now set to run it back live on Netflix with millions watching around the world.
