The Splash brothers reunited this week – but on opposite teams.
Klay Thompson was back in the bay – and received a hero’s reception with an emotional ‘Captain Klay’ tribute, but it was Steph Curry who had the last splash.
Speaking on the latest episode of his own podcast, the Draymond Green Show, the power forward revealed what Thompson did to Curry.
The two-time MVP go off for 37 points, including the game winner against the Dallas Mavericks.
“So I put Steph off, because Steph was supposed to speak before the game,” Green said.
“He said I called Raymond and I told him I’m not speaking, I just need to lock in on the game so I ain’t speaking and I talked to Klay about it.
“Tried to check in with Klay about something else and Klay ghosted him. So he got p***** and here we go! Here we go! That’s why he was like that.”
It seemed Curry could not contain himself when he took over to score the last twelve points of the game as he ran to the other end of the court and held his jersey to the camera, shouting “You better stay here.”
Green revealed that he purposefully decided to ignore questions about Thompson and wanted Curry to do the same.
“So finally (Tuesday) morning, I text Steph and I text him like, ‘Hey, listen here big dog, I need you to be locked in,” Green said.
“Whatever it is you need to do, if that’s watch this tribute video, I said I’m going to do the same.”
The night was emotional for the Warriors and Thompson with the home-team gifting the entire arena a captain’s hat, an item synonymous with their former player and a heart-felt tribute video was played pre-match.
Thompson and Curry together became the Splash brothers, a duo that would go on to be highly successful winning four championships and forming one of the greatest NBA dynasties.
The American left the Warriors after a poor 2023-24 season and signed a 3-year $50-million contract with the Mavericks who reached the NBA Finals.
Curry would go on to dampen Thompson’s return as he scored the game-winning dagger three with 30 seconds left on the clock – and hit his trademark ‘Night, Night’ celebration.
The 2022 finals’ MVP finished with 37 points while four-time NBA champion Thompson recorded 22 in what was a thrilling reunion between the pair that had its ultra-competitive moments.
“Klay Thompson played great. Incredible. And they lost. That’s how we needed the night to go,” Green also said.
Tuesday’s game was an NBA Cup opener for both teams, while its the Warriors – without Thompson who have started better.
Boasting a 9-2 record and sitting second in the Western Conference, they are doing just fine without their former splash brother.
Meanwhile the Mavericks have fallen short of the form that saw them crowned Western Conference champions last season – a 5-6 record is not what they expected to start the year.
Thompson will have an opportunity for revenge as he welcomes Curry to his new home in Dallas on February 12 at the American Airlines Center.
So it looks like Klay learnt a new lesson about his teammate of 13 years, don’t leave him on read.
