AFRIYEA Golf Academy, a Ugandan-based junior golf development program whose mission aligns golf with sustainability, has made it to the Golf Environment Awards 2025 under the International Golf category.

AFRIYEA is competing against Spain’s Camiral Golf & Wellness, Minthis from Cyprus, Mjölby Golf Club from Sweden, and Quinta do Lago Resort from Portugal.

Afriyea Golf Academy will be the only African golf institution in the awards, competing against other environmentally conscious clubs from different parts of the world for the projects.

The Golf Environment Awards were launched in 1995 with the aim of recognizing and rewarding positive environmental practices at golf courses across the globe.

Sharing these practices helps encourage others to follow suit, maximizing the opportunities for golf as an industry to positively impact climate change and improve biodiversity worldwide.

AFRIYEA Golf Academy stands as a unique development in Uganda, where the academy’s mission encompasses teaching golf to the youth of Uganda, both in schools and communities, while also educating young people and their communities about environmental stewardship.

The academy’s teachings link golf with environmental protection, focusing on waste management, tree planting, water conservation, and awareness drives.

Additionally, they organize communal engagement activities, including monthly clean-ups in Fort Portal town and the metropolitan areas of the River Mpanga, which is the lifeline for over 1.2 million people.

The standard of entries is high every year, and we are delighted to see new individuals and clubs at the awards each year.”

“Golf has the power to change lives and shape the future when paired with sustainability, it can transform the world. At Afriyea Golf Academy, we believe that the sport is more than just a game; it’s a platform for meaningful change, where every swing can contribute to a better, greener planet. We are incredibly proud to be at the forefront of this movement, integrating eco-friendly practices, promoting environmental awareness, and embracing innovation to create a future where both golf and nature thrive together.

Being named a finalist in the prestigious Golf Environment Awards is a testament to our commitment to this vision. Competing alongside some of the best golf clubs in the world is an honor, and we are proud to stand with others who share our passion for sustainability. This recognition isn’t just about what we’ve accomplished so far, but about the journey we continue to pursue making a lasting impact on our courses, our communities, and the young golfers we nurture. It affirms our belief that sport can be a powerful force for good, and it motivates us to keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, proving that a greener, smarter future for golf and the planet is within reach one swing at a time.” Isaiah Mwesige, Chief Executive Officer of AFRIYEA Golf Academy, Uganda
