At the halfway stage of this year’s IPL, Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals lead the way at the top of the table having won six of their eight matches so far.
The Titans, captained by Shubman Gill, have been aided by the free flowing runs of the tournament’s top scorer Sai Sudharsan, while World Cup-winning former England white ball captain Jos Buttler is also piling on the runs in his first season with the 2022 champions.
The Capitals, under the captaincy of Axar Patel, have led from the front with the help of the fantastic form of India spinner Kuldeep Yadav and Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc, who have been at the heart of their wicket taking abilities this year.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Mumbai Indians make the rest of play-off positions, with Virat Kohli performing as consistently as ever in this year’s edition, putting him at the second highest run scorer, slightly ahead of Suryakumar Yadav of the Indians.
RCB’s bowling tandem of Josh Hazlewood in the powerplay and Krunal Pandya in the middle overs has won them several matches this season, with the Australian currently the joint-leading wicket taker after his four-fer against Rajasthan on Thursday.
Punjab Kings, under a brand new coach and captain duo of Ricky Ponting and Shreyas Iyer, the latter having captained the Kolkata Knight Riders to glory last season, are enjoying a strong campaign by their recent standards, having won five of their eight games and are knocking on the door of the top four, just ahead of Lucknow Super Giants.
Both of last year’s finalists have struggled to get going this season with Kolkata down in seventh and Sunrisers Hyderabad down in ninth place with just three and two wins to their names respectively.
Jofra Archer’s Rajasthan Royals side, captained by Sanju Samson, have also struggled to get going and five losses on the spin leaves with just two wins from their nine matches, and leaves them level on points with five-time champions the Chennai Super Kings, who prop up the table having lost six of their eight games.
