For the third year in a row and eighth in nine years, the top two teams from the league phase of this season’s IPL meet in Tuesday’s grand final, both bidding to be crowned champions for the very first time.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru were the first team to book their place in Tuesday’s final after winning Qualifier 1 against Punjab last Thursday, thrashing the Kings by a margin of eight wickets, chasing down their target of just 102 in 10 overs.
Virat Kohli, the tournament’s highest all time run scorer, is the star player for the Royal Challengers and leads their run scoring charts again this year, sat fifth in the race for the Orange Cap, with the 36-year-old still on the hunt for an elusive first IPL title in his 18th attempt.
Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood is in the hunt for the Purple Cap, with three wickets in Qualifer 1 taking him within four of Prasidh Krishna at the top of the pile.
Bengaluru will be hoping it’s fourth time lucky for them on Tuesday, having lost all three of their previous finals, their most recent one coming back in 2016.
Punjab Kings finished the league stage on top of the table for just the second time in the franchise’s history, but needed the safety net of Qualifier 2 to book their place in just their second ever final after being thrashed by Tuesday’s opponents in their first qualifier.
Sunday night saw the Kings seal their place in the final after successfully chasing down Mumbai Indians’ total of 203 with an over to spare, thanks in large part to the superiority of their captain and top scorer Shreyas Iyer.
The 30-year-old has become the first player to captain different franchises to the final of consecutive tournaments having lifted the trophy with the Kolkata Knight Riders last year before not being retained, and being picked up by Ricky Ponting’s Punjab Kings in this season’s mega auction.
Tuesday will see Punjab take part in just their second ever IPL final, their first in 11 years, and will be aided by the return of he competition’s highest ever wicket taker Yuzvendra Chahal, who spent eight years as a player with the Royal Challengers.
Both teams finished with identical records of 9-4-1 from their 14 league games, and traded blows as they won one game apiece against each other before Bengaluru got much the better of the two teams when they met in Mullanpur on Thursday night.
