Ireland are the back-to-back defending champions heading into this year’s Championship looking for to win a third on the spin for the first team in the country’s history, also bidding to become the first nation to win three in a row since the France side of the late 1980s, who won four in a row, though two of those were shared.

The defending champions build up to the tournament looks slightly different to tournaments in recent years, with head coach Andy Farrell on Lions duty, leaving defence coach Simon Easterby to take charge of the side for this year’s edition.

Ireland won eight of the 11 games they played last year following their 2023 World Cup disappointment, losing to England in last year’s Six Nations on the way to the title, their first and only defeat in the tournament since February 2022.

England head into this year’s Six Nations Championship looking to achieve their first top two finish since they last won the title in 2020.

Steve Borthwick’s side have the advantage of playing three consecutive home matches after their opening trip to Dublin on Saturday, giving them the opportunity this weekend to build a perfect platform to show their statement of intent with a strong performance in the Irish capital.

England had a difficult year last time out, finishing 2024 with only one win from their last seven matches against Tier 1 opposition, though that sole victory did come against this weekend’s opponents Ireland.

That victory in March at Twickenham last year, decided by a Marcus Smith drop goal, ended a four match winning run for Ireland against England.
