Israel vs Belgium predictions

There have been a few subtle alterations to the Nations League for 2024/25, the fourth edition since the tournament’s launch.

A quarter-final stage has been inserted into the format, adding an extra round before the customary four-team Finals. That means League A runners-up now progress alongside group winners.

Secondly, UEFA has introduced promotion/relegation play-offs between the leagues. So, the third-place finisher in League A will take on a League B runner-up over two legs in March, with the winner starting the next campaign in the top tier.

That change in particular makes a lot of sense. There are now fewer dead rubbers going into matchday six.

Indeed, even though Italy and France have already reached the quarter-finals from this group, we do not yet know which of Israel or Belgium will be automatically relegated and which will take part in the play-offs.

In all likelihood, it will be Israel finishing bottom and going straight down to the second flight. To avoid that fate, they must win this match by three clear goals. Belgium won the reverse fixture 3-1 so have the head-to-head advantage as things stand, while they also have a vastly superior overall goal difference.

Belgium had hoped their quarter-final ambitions would still be alive going into this game, but a 1-0 defeat by Italy on Thursday ended their chances of advancing.

This has been another disappointing campaign for Domenico Tedesco’s team on the back of their underwhelming showing at Euro 2024, where they scraped through their group before losing to France in the round of 16.

As for Israel, they picked up their first point in unlikely circumstances on Thursday, holding France to a goalless draw at the Stade de France.

Les Bleus created more than enough chances to win the game, but a combination of wasteful finishing and dogged Israeli defending allowed the visitors to escape with a point. Surprisingly, it was the third time in their last four head-to-head meetings with France that Israel have avoided defeat.

On Sunday, they will need all three points to stand a chance of avoiding automatic relegation, but even a victory might not be enough to reel in Belgium.

Israel vs Belgium betting tips

Israel take on Belgium on matchday six of the Nations League, with both teams in the relegation mix.

Belgium to win and under 2.5 goals

Belgium had a flurry of around 15 minutes in the second half of Thursday’s game against Italy, but they were second best for most of the match.

In fact, they could easily have lost by more than a goal to nil had Italy not been so profligate in front of goal. The expected goals data finished 2.48-0.52 in the Azzurri’s favour.

Belgium have struggled in attack for much of the campaign. Two of the three goals they managed to score against the big two of Italy and France came when the former had 10 men last month.

Israel will set up with the intention of being difficult to break down. Although they are nominally the home team, this match is taking place in Hungary.

Israel will therefore have no issue with sitting deep and spoiling. Belgium should ultimately get the job done, but it might not be their most convincing victory.

Draw at half-time

Israel did show grit and resilience against France, but they also rode their luck at times.

Still, given they are by far and away the weakest team in the group, they have not fared too badly in the first half of matches so far.

Israel were level against Belgium with 45 minutes on the clock on matchday one, while they only trailed Italy (twice) and France by one goal at the interval.

Belgium have plenty of work to do under Tedesco. While they should have too much quality for Israel over the course of 90 minutes, it could take them a while to get going.

Israel will be buoyed by their draw with France and we are likely to see another solid showing in the opening period on Sunday.

Romelu Lukaku to score any time

Having previously stated that he would not play for the national team again until 2025, Romelu Lukaku has returned to the fold for the November fixtures.

The Napoli frontman was not at his best against Italy, although he was not the only member of Tedesco’s team who wasted a presentable chance.

Lukaku can be frustrating, but his record for Belgium speaks for itself. In just 120 caps, he has made the net bulge 85 times.

Israel will defend with a low block, so Lukaku’s penalty-box prowess will come in handy.

He is not the most reliable finisher at times, but Lukaku is a prolific scorer on the international stage.
