Everyone in Kansas City is holding their breath.
Patrick Mahomes left in the fourth quarter during the Chiefs 21-7 victory over the Browns and did not return due to an ankle injury.
Mahomes attempted a pass while getting hit by two defenders and awkwardly bent over himself, looking to have injured his ankle.
Head coach Andy Reid provided an update after the game.
“Patrick’s right ankle has been hurt,” Reid said. “It’s not broken, but it’s sore.
“He’ll get started on the rehab part of it as we go, and we’ll just have to see how he does down the road here.”
You hear that Kansas City?
Exhale.
It seems you have avoided a catastrophic situation and worst case scenario.
The best news is that Mahomes’ ankle isn’t broken.
Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reported that it’s a high-ankle sprain.
“Per source, Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has a high-ankle sprain,” Florio posted on X. “He’s probably week-to-week.”
While high-ankle sprains are no joke, it’s much less severe than originally thought.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport confirmed that Mahomes’ x-rays were negative and that he will be getting more tests and info on Monday.
The Chiefs are 13-1 and have all but locked up the one seed in the AFC.
They play again on Saturday against the Houston Texans, and then four days later, will be playing on Wednesday, Christmas Day, against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Chiefs, Reid and Mahomes may be wise and just play it safe, sitting Mahomes until the postseason begins in a couple weeks.
Kansas City is looking to do something no team has done in the history of the NFL.
That’s win three Super Bowls in a row, going back-to-back-back.
With the best record in the league, they look to be well on their way.
The only thing that could derail such a dream season, is an injury to their franchise quarterback.
And now that injury has happened.
All eyes will be on Kansas City to see how they maneuver from here, and how long Mahomes is out for, if at all.
