Cover your ears NBA fans, you’re not going to like this.

Ja Morant is no longer going to dunk.

Morant wants to start prioritizing his health, over jaw-dropping dunks

Or at least he’s not going to try and plant his opponent’s body into the ground every time he takes off for the rim.

The high-flying Memphis Grizzlies superstar wants to be smarter when it comes to his high-flying acrobatics, and that means limiting his dunk opportunities.

“I’m not trying to dunk at all,” Morant said to the media after Memphis’ 121-116 loss to the Dallas Mavericks.

“Y’all think I’m lying. I’m dead serious.

“Sometimes I get knocked out the air and [a foul] don’t get called, and now I’m out longer than what I’m supposed to be.

“Sometimes the foul might get called; I still hit the floor, but after the game you might feel that little fall. So I just pick and choose, man.

“Hey, two points is two points. I get it done. That’s all that matters.”

Morant has only dunked three times in the 12 games he’s played.

The sixth-year point guard rose to stardom on the back of his poster dunks and jaw-dropping annihilations at the rim.

It’s what made Morant so popular, and positioned him to be the next face of the NBA, before the suspensions and injuries derailed his rise to the top.

Morant wants to be able to stay on the court and be available to play, and for him, that means limiting his dunks

After season-ending shoulder surgery last year, Morant has bounced back, averaging 22.0 points and 8.6 assists, while leading the Grizzlies to a 14-8 record, good for fourth in the West.

It’s a long season, and Morant wants to be available for most of it.

He has already missed ten games this season due to hip and knee injuries.

Fans booed Morant in Dallas after he had a breakaway to the hoop, but chose to lightly place the ball in the basket with two hands, barely leaving the rim with a whimper.

“Hey, I’m fine with that. Continue to boo me,” Morant said with a smile.

“Hey, I got two points. It was still a dunk. It was just not the dunk they wanted to see. But if they boo me off a little rim-grazer, I’m fine with that.”

And if you’re looking for the walking highlight reel to participate in this year’s dunk contest, don’t get your hopes up.

“If I’m chillin’ on the in-game, you ain’t gotta worry about dunk contest, either,” Morant said.

“Man, my focus right now is do what I can with the team and continue to try to get to 100 per cent [healthy].”

No one can blame Morant for wanting to prioritize his health and be available for his team as much as he can.

It will be a win for the Memphis Grizzlies in the long run.

Unfortunately, it will also be a loss for everyone else looking for Morant to add to his poster collection.
