Jordan Henderson could make a stunning return to English football.

Henderson left Liverpool in 2023 after captaining them to Premier League and Champions League success.

The midfielder joined Steven Gerrard Al Ettifaq for a fee of around £12million.

His spell in the Saudi Pro League lasted just six months, however, as he soon sought a move back to Europe.

Henderson was linked with the Premier League, but that was complicated by the tax implications of returning to the UK.

Instead, he is believed to have taken a 75 per cent pay cut to join Ajax.

The move was understood to be so he would have a chance of making England’s Euro 2024 squad.

Henderson signed a two-and-a-half year contract with Ajax in January.

He did not force his way into Gareth Southgate’s plans after making just nine Eredivisie appearances.

Now The Sun report that he wants out of the Dutch club after less than 12 months in Amsterdam.

The 34-year-old has made just three league appearances all season for the club.

Premier League clubs, and some high-flying Championship teams, are said to be on alert over a possible January move.

Henderson started out his career with Sunderland, who are currently top of the Championship after nine games.

However, the report adds that the same tax issues that prevented him from returning to England in January could still be an issue again.

Henderson could feature for Ajax on Sunday as they face Groningen in the Eredivisie.

Jordan Henderson’s career

Sunderland – 79 games, 5 goals

Coventry (loan) – 13 games, 1 goal

Liverpool – 492 games, 33 goals

Al Ettifaq – 19 games, 0 goals

Ajax – 22 games, 0 goals

The midfielder was also spotted back at Liverpool’s Melwood training ground this week.

The club said he ‘dropped in to the AXA Training Centre this week and was warmly greeted by his former colleagues and members of the current coaching staff’.
