Kawempe Cycling Club launches end of year race, proceeds to be channeled towards tourism boost

Kawempe Cycling Club officially launched their first ever event, dubbed the “end of year Kawempe cycling club bike race”.

The official launch was held at Akamwesi Mall in Kyebando on Thursday, 31st October 2024 for the event which will be held on 17th December 2024 with the start at Gaz Petro station Kanyanya and finishing at Ttula, Kilokole.

Officials from Kawempe Cycling Club were also joined by Sam Mahaba Muwonge, the president of Uganda Cycling Association during the launch.

“Cyclists from Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania will take part in the 120KM (men) and 60KM (women) event. As part of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), 50 percent of the registration fees will be channeled to the Uganda Wildlife Education Center (UWEC) to help feed the animals” Isa Nsereko Musoke, the public relations officer stated.

Registration is at Ug.Shs 20,000 per person and Ug.Shs 100,000 per team of six people.

The registration window will be between 14th to 16th December 2024 at UWEC.

Muwonge commended the efforts of Kawempe Cycling Club which was founded two years ago by Cohen Bogere Kasirye as a means of promoting the sport of cycling and nurturing talents.

Some of the members for Kawempe Cycling Club as the seasoned Azizi Ssempijja, Kintu Bucho (15), Khalid Mukuswabu (17), Salak Mukisa (15) and Mahadi Mutebi (15), among others also attended the press conference.

Prize money:

The winning male rider will take home Ug.Shs 3,000,000 with the 1st runners up pocketing Ug.Shs 1,500,000.

The third placed rider will earn Ug.Shs 750,000 with the fourth one earning Ug.Shs 250,000. The other prize money will be Ug.Shs 150,000 whilst the 6th to 10th cyclists will each take home100,000.

Females:

The outstanding female will earn Ug.Shs 500,000. The first and second runners up will take home Ug.Shs 300,000 and Ug.Shs 200,000 respectively.

  • 2nd Runners up: Ug.Shs 750,000
  • 4th: Ug.Shs 250,000
  • 5th: Ug.Shs 150,000
