Kenya draws first blood on opening day | 2025 EALASCA Games

2025 EALASCA Games (Day 1):

Tug-of-war:

  • Men: Uganda 0-2 Kenya
  • Women: Uganda 0-2 Kenya

Football:

  • CASA (Kenya) 3-1 KCCA Political

The 14th edition of the East Africa Local Authorities Cultural Association (EALASCA) games officially got underway at Hamz Stadium (Nakivubo War Memorial Grounds) on Tuesday, 25th February 2025.

Minister of Kampala City and Metropolitan Affairs Hajjati Minsa Kabanda officiated at the grand opening of the games, flanked by the KCCA Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki.

“I warmly welcome you all to the great city of Kampala for these EALASCA games that are meant to foster unity, friendship and development of our cities. Take time to network and tour the beautiful Kampala city” Hajjati Kabanda remarked.

She was then involved in the official inspection of the Uganda and Kenya Tug-of war teams as well as the football players before action.

“This is not a mere sporting event, but a symbol of our shared aspirations as East Africa. These games present a unique platform for fostering regional cooperation” KCCA ED Buzeki stated.

In the very first opening event of the championship, Kenya won the Tug-of-war competition in either gender much to the delight of the spectators in the stands.

First in action were the Kenyan women who out-muscled their opponents 2-0.

Then the Kenyan men were clinical against Uganda with a 2-0 scoreline.

The official opening football match witnessed CASA (Kenya) recover from a goal down to overcome KCCA councilors 3-1 in the political match.

Bonny Ssebunoni gave KCCA councilors the lead at the start of the second half.

CASA recomposed themselves and scored through Steven Mwangi’s brace and another goal bt Oben Mwale.

“We capitalized upon the mistakes of our opponents and of course change in formation especially after we conceded. This is a good beginning” CASA team manager Hon. Mohammed Dudu noted after the match.

Dudu is on the same technical committee as former Harambee Stars teammate Morris Sunguti.

More matches:

Indoor games as Darts, Pool, Draught, Scrabble and Chess will commence on Wednesday, 26th February 2025 at Hamz Stadium.

These will be played co-currently as volleyball, basketball, netball and football; at the same venue.

The football early kick off will witness Mbale face Jinja (Technical) before KICOSCA will tussle KCCA in another technical affair.

CASA will then take on Jinja in the political duel and other matches till dawn.

Kenya (Kisumu city) hosted the previous games that bring together the cities of Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan and Burundi.

EACoG is a Regional Sports initiative that emanates from the decision of the 20th EAC Council of Ministers, which directed the Secretariat to organize and hold Sports Tournaments on regular basis with partnership of private sector, civil society, voluntary organizations/ institutions/individuals and Development Partners.
