Khamzat Chimaev submitted Robert Whittaker in the first round at UFC 308 to spoil Conor McGregor’s chances of cashing $17million.

McGregor bet $500,000 on Whittaker to knock out Chimaev and Ilia Topuria to flatten Max Holloway in the UFC 308 co-main and main event.

If it had come off, McGregor would have pocketed $17.2m, but it wasn’t to be.

McGregor lost $500,000 by backing Renan Ferreira to beat Francis Ngannou last weekend and fell to $1m in the red by betting the wrong way on UFC’s blockbuster Abu Dhabi event.

“Abysmal,” tweeted a furious McGregor in the immediate aftermath.

“Scutter a*** it’s still shartin time. A mill in a week! Damn! The rich get richer yup my auntie trust.

“Hunt? Backing up against the fence opening bell is hunting?”

From the opening bell, Chimaev came charging across the cage and dumped Whittaker on the canvas.

The Russian sensation quickly took Whittaker’s back and began threatening with submissions.

Eventually, he locked in a tight face crank submission that forced the tap from the former UFC middleweight champion.

Chimaev now finds himself in an extremely strong position to challenge 185lbs champion Dricus du Plessis.

And that’s exactly what he called for next. “I’m going for the belt, I love my brother (Whittaker) you are a legend,” Chimaev said post-fight.

“Respect, he took the fight. Nobody wants to fight with me, all the champions are running from me…

“Dana, what is wrong with the UFC? Give me the belt.”

Whittaker tapped to the face crank extremely quickly and revealed in the immediate aftermath that Chimaev had dislocated his jaw.

Chimaev is now 14-0 overall and 6-0 in the UFC.

There were concerns he would never fight again after falling violently ill before his original fight date with Whittaker in June.

But ‘Borz’ is now back and better than ever.
