Kampala Old Boys (KOBs) Rugby Club will host the second edition of the Kitaka Tens (10s) at their fierce rivals Black Pirates’ home ground Kings Park.
In a press event on Friday morning, KOBs chairperson Dr Tony Stone Luggya has explained that moving from their home ground Legends was “a rugby decision.”
”Legends is the home of the KCB KOBs. We had a few clashing commitments when we moved the tournament by a week, so we respected the contractual obligations of people who were there,” Dr Luggya began by saying.
The October 26-27 weekend, on which the Kitaka 10s will be played, was the only open weekend before the new season begins. This left KOBs with no choice but to look elsewhere.
”For us, it was a rugby decision. The tournament had to go on. We have the activity of the union calendar not allowing us to push further, so we still feel Kings Park in its own will give us the deserved tournament that we want.”

Despite Black Pirates and KOBs being eternal rivals, Dr Luggya added that “Kings Park is a brother’s home (and) Pirates is our young brother.”
”The fans’ rivalry will be there, that’s expected. Which is good for the growth of the game because then you know it’s competitive enough.”
Fourteen men’s teams, including Kenya 7s champions Harlequins, and eight women’s teams are expected to participate in the two-day tournament next weekend. The pools and fixtures will be drawn on Monday morning.
Beverage manufacturer Nile Special’s sponsorship package has added a boost to the tournament. The men’s winner will bag UGX 4 million and the first runner-up will get UGX 2 million. The women’s winner will take home UGX 1 million.
Individual award winners – the respective men’s and women’s top scorers and Most Valuable Players – will earn five hundred thousand Uganda shillings.
Kenya’s Nondescripts Rugby Club (men) and Black Pearls (women) were the champions of the first edition at Legends Rugby Club last year.
After the Kitaka 10s, KOBs will host Kenya Harlequins for another week. Harlequins will play against a combined XVs team selected from the Kitaka 10s on Wednesday, October 30 and on Saturday, November 2, pending a green light from the Uganda Rugby Union, will face a KOBs Chairman’s Select team.
