Leicester are expected to sack Ruud van Nistelrooy at the end of the season, talkSPORT understands.
The Foxes were officially relegated to the Championship following Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at home to Liverpool.
It spelled the end of a treacherous run of form for Van Nistelrooy’s side who are without a goal in their last nine home league games.
Doubts remain over whether the Dutchman will lead the Foxes next season despite having two years remaining on his contract.
talkSPORT understands that he will not be in the dugout when their Championship season starts.
A top contender for the job is former England interim boss Lee Carsley.
Carsley is currently head coach of the under-21s, impressed during his time in charge of the Three Lions, winning five of his six games at the helm.
Former Southampton boss Russell Martin has admirers at the Midlands club there but no formal contacts as of yet.
Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Röhl is also on the shortlist as is Cesc Fabregas who has impressed with Serie A new boys Como.
Van Nistelrooy, who took over as boss in late November after the sacking of Steve Cooper revealed he was set for talks with club chiefs in the near future.
He told talkSPORT: “I’m doing my job with the responsibility to do the best for the football club from now until the end of the season. I’m waiting on the direction the club want to go and see if we can be aligned on that.”
When asked how quickly those conversations will take place with the owners, Van Nistelrooy added: “I hope soon.”
Van Nistelrooy’s appointment was a gamble that has gone horribly wrong for Leicester’s under-fire board.
A short stint as Manchester United interim boss saw the Dutchman quickly elevated to the top of the wanted list however things quickly turned sour with the Foxes unable to shake off an extended run of defeats.
Sunday’s loss means Van Nistelrooy has overseen 16 defeats in his sides last 18 games.
And the numbers don’t get any better for the former Manchester United striker who has amassed just eight points since taking over at the King Power Stadium.
