Chelsea continue their Conference League campaign against Legia Warsaw on Thursday. Enzo Maresca’s men are targeting a trophy in the manager’s first season at Stamford Bridge, and this is the last chance to realise that aim.
Will Chelsea take a giant step towards the semi-finals, or can Legia spring a surprise in the upcoming first leg?

Legia Warsaw vs Chelsea predictions
Chelsea are chasing a top-five finish in the Premier League as they seek to qualify for the Champions League. It was therefore a surprise when Enzo Maresca rang the changes for Sunday’s game against Brentford.
Nicolas Jackson, Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto and Marc Cucurella all dropped out of the starting XI from the 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur a few days prior.
Chelsea were unsurprisingly laboured in the first half. Things improved slightly in the second period when those four players entered the fray, but Chelsea ended up drawing 0-0 and dropping two points.
“Not all of them were 100 percent,” Maresca said afterwards, explaining why he shuffled his pack to such an extent.
“The idea was to start one way and finish another way. The plan nearly worked because we created more in the second half but the volume probably wasn’t enough to win the game.”
Maresca had a point and the narrative would have been vastly different had Chelsea taken one of their chances. But with the top-five race so tight, he undoubtedly took a risk at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Perhaps he also had an eye on Thursday’s clash with Legia Warsaw. Chelsea are strong favourites to win the Conference League, but they should not take anything for granted.
For all that they have been both underwhelming and inconsistent in the Premier League for the last few months, Chelsea have been reliable in this competition. Their eight matches since the start of the league phase have yielded eight wins.
Maresca in effect used a second-string side in the Conference League before Christmas. Chelsea were not at full strength against Copenhagen in the round of 16 either, but they still had enough quality to win the first leg 2-1 and the second leg 1-0.
Legia Warsaw began their Conference League journey back in the second qualifying round. They finished seventh in the league phase and then beat Molde 4-3 on aggregate in the last 16.
Legia, 15-time Polish champions, are struggling domestically, though. Despite a 2-1 triumph over Gornik Zabrze at the weekend, Goncalo Feio’s men are fifth in the Ekstraklasa. Even so, Chelsea will not necessarily have everything their own way in this one.

Legia Warsaw vs Chelsea betting tips
Chelsea head to Poland as they continue their bid to win the Conference League for the first time.
Draw
Chelsea deserve to be heavy favourites to win this match, but it is worth a punt on a draw.
Maresca’s men have been poor away from home for some time. They have not won any of their last eight Premier League games on the road, a run which stretches back to mid-December.
Chelsea did beat Copenhagen in Denmark last month, but recent evidence suggests they will not find it easy at the Polish Army Stadium.

As for Legia, they are pretty strong when playing in front of their own supporters, who are bound to create a raucous atmosphere on Thursday.
Legia have only lost once at home since September, as well as just one of their seven Conference League games on familiar turf.

Both teams to score
Chelsea fans are not entirely behind Maresca and his style of play.
With some justification, the Stamford Bridge faithful has voiced its frustration about an approach which is often too ponderous and predictable.
Maresca insists he will not change his ways, although even the manager notes that Chelsea can get better at plan A.
We do expect the Blues to find the back of the net against Legia Warsaw, who are not used to facing attackers of the calibre of Chelsea’s.
At the same time, the Polish outfit have every chance of making the net bulge at home.

Nicolas Jackson to score any time
Jackson has only just returned from injury, so the management of his minutes does make sense.
The Senegal international has only made one appearance in the Conference League so far this term, but Maresca must be tempted to employ his best striker now that we have reached the quarter-final stage.
Jackson is a much better fit for the centre-forward role than Christopher Nkunku, who was disappointing against Brentford.
Jackson might not be the most polished attacker, but he is the best the Blues have got in that position.
The former Villarreal man can reach double figures for the season with a goal in the Polish capital.
