Liam Cameron reveals that Ben Whittaker looked down on him before their fight.

Whittaker entered the contest as a heavy favourite and was branded ‘Britain’s next big boxing star’ by the media before the light-heavyweight bout.

According to Cameron, the plaudits got to his head in the lead-up to fight night, causing Whittaker to overlook him.

“I don’t want to be critical of the lad, but he was not nice all fight week,” Cameron told talkSPORT.

“I saw him at the airport and I nodded to him, because I’m a gentleman and I thought I’ll be nice, we hadn’t got to the fight yet.

“And he completely blanked me. They were all wearing T-shirts saying, ‘Body bag season’.

“He was slagging my clothes off, my nose. Obviously I’ve got no money at the minute, well, I didn’t have, and he’s got all this Louis V.

“And he was talking down to me. I thought, ‘Do you know what? I’m going to get you.

“I’m going to keep calm and I’m going to show you in that ring.’”

The fight ended in bizarre circumstances when both men bundled over the top rope in the fifth round.

While Cameron was able to make his way back to his feet Whittaker stayed down, clutching his right leg.

The Olympic silver medallist was deemed unable to continue resulting in the fight going to a technical split decision draw – although Cameron insists Whittaker was looking for a way out.

“He 100 per cent quit. Of course, he did,” Cameron added before news came out disclosing Whittaker had sprained his ankle during the fall.

“I was putting pressure on him, but I thought, ‘I’m not going to give him everything yet.

“I’m going to break his heart. I’m going to break this young kid’s heart and show him this is pro boxing.’

“And I just thought, ‘I’ll chip away, chip away.’ From the second round, he was breathing so heavy.

“He spat his gum shield out, he was holding me constantly, he was low-blowing me.

“And he basically dragged me onto the ropes. You can see him flip his head back.

“And why I went over, [it was] because he got me, do you know what I mean? And he flipped me onto my neck.

“He was exhausted. I hit him with a body shot before that happened. And I could feel it really take everything out of him.

“And his shots were so forced, he had to put everything into his shots that last round. He was exhausted, I was quite surprised how easy it was.”

After the fight, Cameron signed a long-term deal with Frank Warren and is now hoping to land a rematch with Whittaker.

“Ben Whittaker is in a really bad position because he has to fight me again. And he can’t beat me. There’s no way of that,” Cameron continued.

“He cannot beat me. There’s no way on this planet Earth he can ever beat me.

“Ben needs the rematch. I can go all different paths, obviously, with Frank Warren backing me.

“He needs that rematch. There’s no way out of it. The fans are going to demand it.

“Well, his fans and stuff and the internet, you know what it’s like, it can be an horrible place. All his followers have turned and given me the love and support.”
