Lille vs Borussia Dortmund predictions

Borussia Dortmund must look back on the first leg of this Champions League last-16 tie as a missed opportunity.

Most teams prefer to play the second leg at their home ground, a privilege that was extended to Lille after they secured a top-eight finish in the league phase.

Dortmund were therefore targeting a win at Signal Iduna Park so they could take a lead to the Stade Pierre-Mauroy this week. The more optimistic members of the fan base wondered if BVB might even be able to put the tie beyond Lille by blowing them away in Germany.

It did not work out like that. Karim Adeyemi gave Dortmund the lead shortly after the half-hour mark with a fantastic strike, but Niko Kovac’s team failed to build on that advantage.

Lille had chances to level things up early in the second half and Jonathan David had a penalty claim denied. The pressure was building and in the 68th minute Hakon Arnar Haraldsson restored parity after poking the ball into the BVB net.

It was a tight game with both teams managing just one shot on target each, but Lille had 57 percent possession and mustered up an xG of 0.88 compared to just 0.27 for Dortmund. Having gone 1-0 up, Kovac’s team should have pushed on in the second half, but they were unable to do so.

Overall it was a lackluster showing from the Bundesliga side, who must now win in the north of France if they want to advance to the last eight inside 90 minutes.

“We’re expecting a very tough task in Lille and we expect to progress in the end,” Kovac said after the 1-1 draw. I’m definitely satisfied with the development of my team, even if there are setbacks like today in the second half.”

Another setback was to follow on Saturday, as Dortmund suffered a 1-0 home defeat by Augsburg. They remain 10th in the Bundesliga and a first bottom-half finish since 2007/08 is very much on the cards.

Dortmund’s season in effect comes down to the Champions League. Runners-up last season, they are determined to reach the latter stages once again. But while Lille are not a European heavyweight, it would be a grave error to not take them seriously.

Lille vs Borussia Dortmund betting tips

This Champions League last-16 tie could go either way – will Lille or Borussia Dortmund advance?

Lille to qualify

Lille have upset the odds since the very start of this Champions League campaign. The Ligue 1 side started their journey way back in the third qualifying round after only finishing fourth in France’s top flight last term.

Once they came through that and the play-offs, no one thought Lille had a chance of finishing in the top eight.

Yet thanks in part to victories over Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, that is exactly what Bruno Genesio’s side did.

Lille took 10 points from a possible 12 at home in the league phase, so they are not easy to beat at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

Borussia Dortmund are a dangerous team when everything clicks, but unfortunately for them that is not very often. We expect Lille to go through, whether it is in 90 minutes, after extra time or on penalties.

Under 2.5 goals

Good quality chances were few and far between at Signal Iduna Park last time out, and that could be the case again in the return fixture.

There are no second chances after Wednesday’s encounter, so we could see nerves on display from both Lille and Borussia Dortmund.

Indeed, the tie may ultimately be decided by which side is able to handle the occasion better.

Kovac’s men will be determined to keep things tight at the back in the first half in the knowledge that an early concession would put a dent in Dortmund’s fragile confidence.

All things considered, this is set to be another cagey affair.

Jonathan David to score any time

Many expected David to move onto new pastures last summer, but the Canada international instead stayed put.

His contract is up at the end of this season and he will almost certainly move on then. For now, though, David is fully focused on firing Lille into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The 25-year-old has scored 22 goals in all competitions this term. Eight of those have come in Europe, including in the qualifying rounds.

David is a real handful and with him leading the line, Lille will really fancy their chances against Borussia Dortmund.

Kovac’s team are struggling to keep clean sheets and David has the tools to take full advantage of any defensive deficiencies on Wednesday night.
