Liverpool vs Accrington Stanley predictions
By the sky-high standards they have set for themselves this season, the past week has been a disappointing one for Liverpool.
If they are being truthful, the vast majority of the club’s supporters would admit they expected the Reds to run roughshod over Manchester United last Sunday.
Instead, United delivered a surprisingly accomplished performance to leave Anfield with a 2-2 draw. Liverpool created chances on the day, but there is no doubt they were below par.
In midweek, Arne Slot’s side suffered what was only their second defeat of their campaign in all competitions.
There is still a second leg to come in their EFL Cup semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur, but it is the north Londoners who hold a slender advantage at half-time following their 1-0 triumph on Wednesday.
The match was not without controversy. Lucas Bergvall was the match-winner late on, but Liverpool believe the teenager should have been sent off shortly before he broke the deadlock.
“I think it was quite obvious it was going to be a second yellow [for Bergvall]. It was pretty clear. And a minute later he scores the winner … a coincidence,” said a frustrated Virgil van Dijk.
Liverpool must dust themselves down quickly. With the second leg at Anfield, they are still the favourites to advance to the EFL Cup final.
Given they are already through to the semis of that competition, plus the superior status of the Premier League and Champions League, the FA Cup is probably at the bottom of Liverpool’s list of priorities.
Liverpool fans, you feel, would happily discard this tournament if it meant they were victorious in either the top flight or on the continent.
Still, a home tie against Accrington Stanley means the Reds will almost certainly progress to the fourth round.
This is Accrington’s first ever visit to Anfield in the club’s current iteration (the original team folded in 1966, 10 years after a 2-0 loss to Liverpool in the FA Cup). Their players, staff and fans will enjoy the occasion, but there will not be much to cheer about on the pitch.
Liverpool vs Accrington Stanley betting tips
Liverpool entertain Accrington Stanley in the third round of the FA Cup this weekend.
Liverpool over 3.5 goals
This is exactly the sort of draw that Accrington Stanley were hoping for. With gate receipts split evenly between the two clubs, Accrington will be due a sizable windfall after Saturday’s game.
After ending 2024 with a run of one win in 10 League Two games, Accrington have started the year with back-to-back victories.
Yet beating Grimsby Town and Colchester United does not give them any greater chance against the mighty Liverpool.
Free Bet Offers
After failing to triumph over either Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool will be determined to win this one convincingly.
Even if Slot shuffles his pack, Liverpool will have far too much quality for their fourth-tier opponents. Bear in mind, too, that Accrington have the joint second-worst defensive record in League Two.

First half higher scoring
Accrington Stanley will not see much of the ball at Anfield. Even if they were to give their best defensive performance of the season, it would probably not be enough to keep out Liverpool.
Slot’s side face a tricky trip to in-form Nottingham Forest in the upcoming midweek round of Premier League fixtures.
Forest memorably beat Liverpool at Anfield earlier in the campaign. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are capable of doing so again on Tuesday.
Slot would love to get this FA Cup tie done and dusted as quickly as possible so that he can begin making plans for Forest.
With that in mind, Liverpool could run riot in the first half before easing off after the interval. Do not be surprised if there are more goals earlier than later.
Tip the first half to be higher scoring at 9/5 with Betfred
Darwin Nunez to score any time
Darwin Nunez was suspended for the EFL Cup game against Tottenham Hotspur, but he is available again for the visit to Anfield of Accrington Stanley.
Nunez might even be Liverpool’s most senior starter so Slot will expect him to lead from the front.
The Uruguay international continues to divide opinion. He is certainly capable of causing havoc in the final third, but his finishing remains erratic.
Still, Nunez will be coming up against League Two defenders and the gulf in class should be pretty obvious.
The striker can boost his confidence with a goal or two this weekend. Nunez faces an uncertain future at Anfield, so he will be determined to show he can still contribute, even if it is against lower-league opposition.
