Liverpool vs Chelsea predictions

Liverpool fans would have been nervous about the arrival of a new manager after years of success under Jurgen Klopp.

The German is an Anfield legend, and anybody following in his footsteps has a lot to live up to.

So far, so good, for new boss Arne Slot.

Matchweek 8 will start with Liverpool on top of the table with 18 points from seven matches.

The Reds have scored in every fixture this season except the defeat to Nottingham Forest. They have also only conceded two goals in the Premier League this campaign.

But the match against Chelsea marks the start of a run of games that will really test Slot’s more defensively sound Liverpool team.

After Chelsea, Liverpool travel to Germany to face RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday. They then head south to London to face Arsenal at the Emirates in Matchweek 9 of the Premier League.

We will all be far better placed to see how things are shaping up at Anfield after these three testing fixtures.

Chelsea also welcomed a new boss in the summer with former Manchester City assistant manager and Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca appointed as the new head coach.

It’s probably fair to say that Maresca inherited a bit of a mess.

His first job was to trim down the London club’s bloated squad. His second was to get a settled team out onto the pitch.

In fairness to him, Maresca has managed to achieve both in just a few weeks at the club.

Furthermore, the Italian has also implemented a possession based style of play that seems to suit playing on the road.

So far this season, Chelsea has played three away from the Bridge in the Premier League and won them all.

At home, they have one win in four. So there is something not quite clicking there.

Nevertheless, Chelsea has scored in every match this season except for their 2-0 opening weekend defeat to Manchester City.

A visit to Anfield will be a great test for Maresca’s new look team.

First takes on fourth at Anfield.

Liverpool has started impressively under new boss Arne Slot, but so have Chelsea under Enzo Maresca.

Odds of 13/20 for Liverpool to win at home against a team with a 100% record on the road looks slightly short.

That’s not to say Liverpool won’t win. They have only conceded two goals in the Premier League this season, after all.

In a fixture that looks hard to predict, you might want to check out our alternative tips below:

Chelsea and the draw in double chance market

Liverpool fans might not like this, but Arne Slot’s team haven’t really been challenged in the Premier League this season.

The Reds could smash Chelsea on Sunday. I’m not ruling that out.

But with Liverpool not having really been put under any serious pressure yet (and I include the 3-0 win over Man Utd in that), along with Chelsea’s excellent away form, a wager on Chelsea and the draw at odds against looks good value.

It’s also a fair argument to say that wins on the road over Wolves, Bournemouth and West Ham aren’t season defining, but what they do tell us is that Chelsea is a team set up to play away from home.

It will be interesting to see how Liverpool approach this match. They have shored up at the back considerably under Slot.

So do they come out and attack Chelsea and risk conceding? Or do they play a patient game and hope that an individual piece of magic from one of their many talented forwards makes the difference?

Either way, a bet on Chelsea to leave Anfield with at least a point looks worth the risk.

Under 2.5 goals

This tip is half a hunch bet and half based on statistics.

Liverpool has played three home matches in the Premier League this season. Only in one of those games has there been over 2.5 goals, in the Reds’ 3-0 win over Bournemouth.

Against Brentford there were two goals, and against Forest there was only one.

Furthermore, we know Liverpool don’t give away many goals. They have conceded just once this season.

Yes, we can see Chelsea scoring, but not many.

Under 3.5 goals is 3/4. That looks like a good bet value to us. But at just a fraction under 2/1, a bet on under 2.5 goals looks well worth a wager at 15/8. Especially in a match that could see both teams cancel each other out.

Jadon Sancho to score or assist

Jadon Sancho is enjoying a new lease of life under Enzo Maresca at Chelsea.

The on-loan wide man has played four times in the Premier League for the London club and has already registered four assists.

Sancho made his Chelsea debut in the 1-0 win over Bournemouth and made an immediate impact by gaining the assist for Christopher Nkunku’s winner.

Sancho followed that up by playing a role in Nicolas Jackson’s opening goal in the 3-0 win over West Ham. And for good measure, the former Dortmund man registered two more assists in Chelsea’s 4-2 win over Brighton.

His good run came to an end in the 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest.

But what chance the Manchester United owned player can cause some damage against one of his parent club’s chief rivals.
