Liverpool vs PSG predictions

One of the joys of football is that you do not have to play well to win. Its low-scoring nature means it is perfectly possible to be outmanoeuvred for 90 minutes yet still emerge triumphant.

Just ask Liverpool. Not even the most one-eyed member of the Anfield faithful could argue in good faith that the Reds were the better team against Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

In the end, that does not really matter. The history books will show a 1-0 Liverpool win. You might get plaudits for a dominant but losing performance. You do not get any points.

Besides, can it ever really be said that a side ‘deserved’ to win? Perhaps in the case of a string of incorrect refereeing decisions or other injustices. Ibrahima Konate was certainly lucky to avoid a red card in the first half at the Parc des Princes, and PSG had a goal disallowed for a marginal offside. But this was hardly Tom Henning Ovrebo at Stamford Bridge.

At the risk of dumbing things down, football is about putting the ball in the back of the net. PSG did not do that in the first leg, thanks in large part to Alisson Becker’s heroics between the sticks. Liverpool, through the substitute Harvey Elliott, did.

There are two ways to look at the underlying numbers, which showed PSG outshot Liverpool 27-2 and racked up an xG of 1.78 to their opponents’ 0.27.

One is that Luis Enrique’s team were extremely unfortunate. The other is that they were wasteful in front of goal and gave Liverpool the opportunity to deliver that late sucker punch.

There is no point dwelling on the first leg now. Luis Enrique will accentuate the positives, telling his players that no team has outplayed Liverpool like PSG did last week.

Doing so at Anfield will be much tougher, of course, but if the Parisians were to open the scoring on Tuesday night, the momentum would be with them.

“I think we’ll be in the best possible shape for the Liverpool game. We’ve got nothing to lose. Our only objective is victory and that’s what we’re going for,” Luis Enrique said after PSG’s 4-1 defeat of Stade Rennais on Saturday.

Liverpool vs PSG betting tips

PSG must beat Liverpool at Anfield to stand a chance of advancing to the Champions League quarter-finals.

Liverpool to win

Liverpool fell behind to Southampton at the weekend in a top-versus-bottom clash in the Premier League. Normal service was quickly resumed, though, and the Reds swept to a 3-1 victory in the second half.

Arne Slot had some choice words for his players at the interval and it is hard to avoid the conclusion that Liverpool had allowed a degree of complacency to creep in.

That will not be an issue against PSG. This is the knockout phase of the Champions League and the first leg of this tie showed that the Parisians deserve respect.

Liverpool know they got away with one last week and they will be determined to show what they are really about under the floodlights at Anfield.

This is a young PSG team and they could struggle to handle the atmosphere in the stands and  the intensity on the pitch.

Liverpool to score last

You would obviously rather be a goal in front than a goal behind on aggregate heading into the second leg, but PSG do at least have the benefit of clarity.

Whereas there is a chance Liverpool could be stuck in two minds – protect the lead or extend it? – PSG know exactly what they need to do on Tuesday.

With that in mind, we can envisage a situation in which the French champions make a bright start and turn the Anfield crowd jittery.

Liverpool should get stronger as the game wears on, though. In their seven Champions League games this term, they have scored the last goal six times.

We fancy them to do the same against PSG on Tuesday.

Mohamed Salah to score any time

This is not just the season of Mohamed Salah’s career. It is also one of the best individual campaigns we have seen from a player in Premier League history.

A brace of penalties against Southampton means Salah has now scored a league-high 27 goals in 2024/25. He has also provided 17 assists, more than any of his peers.

If the Egypt international were to lead Liverpool to a seventh Champions League crown, the Ballon d’Or would surely be his.

Salah is not the type to look too far ahead, though. For now he will be fully focused on putting PSG to the sword in the second leg.

He may have had a quiet game at the Parc des Princes, but Salah should be much more potent here.
