Liverpool vs Southampton predictions
Even the best teams need a bit of good fortune from time to time.
On the balance of play, Liverpool could easily have been beaten 3-0 by Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday. Instead, they won 1-0.
Alisson Becker gave the performance of his career to date in between the sticks, but Liverpool had Lady Luck to thank as well as their goalkeeper. PSG, for their part, were justified in feeling hard done by.
Liverpool struggled to get a hold of the ball and take shots at goal at the Parc des Princes. The boot will surely be on the other foot when Southampton visit Anfield this weekend.
Liverpool are top of the Premier League; Southampton are bottom. Liverpool have scored the most goals; Southampton have scored the fewest. Liverpool have the division’s second-best defensive record; Southampton have the worst. It is hard to know if Liverpool have been better this season than Southampton have been worse, or vice versa.
The bookies rate the Saints’ chances of triumphing on Saturday at 20/1. Make no mistake, an away win would go down as one of the biggest shocks in Premier League history, up there with Chelsea 0-3 Sunderland (2010), Manchester United 2-3 Blackburn Rovers (2011) and Norwich City 3-2 Manchester City (2019).
If you were to try and make a case for a historic upset, you would point to the fact that Liverpool are 13 points clear at the top of the table and will therefore have at least one eye on the second leg against PSG and next weekend’s EFL Cup final against Newcastle United.
Arne Slot is likely to shuffle his pack with those games in mind, while the manager himself is banned from the touchline after being shown a red card in last month’s Merseyside derby with Everton.
Even then, it is extremely hard to make a case for a Southampton side whose relegation back to the Championship is a question of when rather than if.
The only thing they are still fighting for is to avoid becoming the worst team in Premier League history by bettering Derby County’s record low points tally of 11 (Southampton are currently on nine). Liverpool will not experience too many difficulties this weekend.

Liverpool vs Southampton betting tips
Liverpool host Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday – is this a foregone conclusion?
Liverpool -2.5 Asian handicap
It is tempting to predict a total shellacking when the Premier League leaders host the team propping up the division, but anyone considering tipping a 5-0 or 6-0 win should proceed with caution.
Sure, it is hard to see how a Southampton team with a goal difference of -46 will be able to shut down arguably the best team in Europe on their own patch.

Yet if Slot does use this match as an opportunity to give players like Mohamed Salah, Ryan Gravenberch and Virgil van Dijk some time off, Liverpool might not be quite as effective as normal.
On top of that, it would be sensible for the Reds to ease off and conserve energy once the three points are in the bag.
Play it safe by backing a three-goal victory rather than something much bigger.
Tip Liverpool to win with a -2.5 Asian handicap at 49/50 with Paddy Power
Over 3.5 cards
Ivan Juric has not been able to lift Southampton out of their funk, but there have been a few changes under the former Roma boss.
The Saints are less concerned with playing out from the back and controlling the ball than they were under the dogmatic Russell Martin.
Southampton also play with more aggression these days, hence their ranking at the top of the charts for cards (yellow and red combined).
Frustration is likely to creep in on Saturday, especially if the Saints find themselves out of the game after an hour.
With all that in mind, this bet represents decent value.

Darwin Nunez to score any time
Darwin Nunez was heavily involved in Liverpool’s winning goal against PSG, laying the ball into the path of Harvey Elliott, who finished with aplomb.
Both players are pushing for a start on Saturday and Slot is particularly likely to give Nunez an opportunity to impress.
The Uruguay international faces an uncertain future at Anfield and he has clearly not lived up to expectations. It would not be at all surprising if he was sold in the summer.
Nunez can still be useful on occasion, though, and he should get plenty of chances to make his mark against Southampton.
