Liverpool Women will be tasked with overcoming their Anfield demons in a huge WSL clash against Man City.

The Reds stormed to a fantastic fourth-placed finish in the WSL last season, stunning the field with manager Matt Beard at the helm.

This season, they are looking to go even better – but a modest start to the campaign has seen them win one and draw two so far.

Liverpool will have the chance to pull off one of the shocks of the season if they can defeat current WSL leaders Man City at Anfield on Sunday 11 October.

But while the side are relishing their return to one of football’s most iconic stadiums, there is something about this stadium that does not seem to inspire the best performances from them.

Liverpool Women have lost all three of the games they have played at Anfield – and all of them have been Merseyside derbies.

Last season, they lost the fixture 1-0, despite ending up having a far suprerior season to Everton overall.

The story was the same the season before at Anfield – although that time, local rivals Everton managed to put three goals past them.

And in their very first game at Anfield back in 2019, Everton defeated the Reds 1-0 in a season which ultimately saw Liverpool relegated to the Women’s Championship.

And the bad omens do not end there.

Not only have they lost all these games, but the Reds have failed to score even a single goal at Anfield.

Beard’s side will be absolutely desperate to change that record and to give the home crowds in the Kop at least one goal to celebrate.

And there is one factor about this game which might just work in their favour.

All their Anfield heartbreak so far has come at the hands of Everton, their longtime rivals and perhaps their ‘bogey’ team.

This team, it is Man City they welcome to the fortress and while the Citizens are certainly a formidable team, Liverpool will be hoping that facing a new team at Anfield could bring a chance to break their curse.

For the first time ever, Liverpool Women will play three WSL fixtures at Anfield – with their home fixtures against Man United and Everton also being staged there later in the season.

It means christening the stadium with some goals will be at the forefront of their minds when they welcome the current WSL leaders.

But the good news for the Reds is that this time around, they have got a secret weapon that they have never had before at this stadium.

Summer signing Olivia Smith has already impressed in her first few appearances, bagging a goal and an LFC Player of the Month award.

And she is absolutely itching to take her first steps on the prestigious pitch.

“I think ever since it was announced that we’d be playing at Anfield, it’s just been on my mind constantly,” she told Liverpoolfc.com.

She added: “I think as I’ve said a little bit earlier in the season the fans are going to be our rock.

“Just having as many supporters as we can is going to be super-important for us and just the loudness of the stadium is important for us to get us going.”

We have to be super-focused,” she admitted. “I think it goes to show our match against Tottenham wasn’t easy but on a good day we can win.

“I think we have the talent in this team to do that. We have individual talent, as a team we come together very well.

“So I think once we’re focused and have the right mindset and we’re on a good day, we can win.”
