West Ham’s surprise win at Arsenal on Saturday afternoon in a London derby turned out to be a very profitable one for one lucky Hammers fan, who turned £50 into £9,300 after his fanciful bet came through.
Hammers supporter Paul Turner staked £50 on Jarrod Bowen to score first and West Ham to win 1-0 at huge odds of 185/1, and saw saw the cash come streaming into his account upon the final whistle.
The east London side made the short trip to the north of the capital as heavy underdogs, with Arsenal fighting for the Premier League title and looking to close the gap on the top of the table to five points and pile the pressure on Liverpool ahead of their trip to the Etihad on Sunday.
West Ham started the day down in 16th in the Premier League table, just two places above the relegation zone, after picking up just one point in their previous four outings and their fans, with the exception of Mr Turner, must have been fearing the worst with the Gunners unbeaten at home in the league since April last year.
West Ham’s defensive solidity stood firm though, and the first part of Turner’s bet came through as Jarrod Bowen nodded home Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s enticing cross from point blank range to give the Hammers the lead just moments before the half time whistle.
The Irons held firm in the second half, profiting for a mistimed Myles Lewis-Skelly red card for fouling Mohammed Kudus when he was through on goal in the 73rd minute.
The Gunners fired 20 shots on West Ham’s goal across the 90 minutes but couldn’t beat the Hammers’ defence or Alphonse Areola in goal, sending the travelling support home happy, and filling Mr Turner’s pockets.
