Luke Modric has written himself into Real Madrid’s history books by becoming the oldest player to play an official match for the club.

The midfielder took to the field against Celta Vigo on Saturday night at the age of 39 years and 40 days to break a long-standing club record.

The previous holder of the record was Los Blancos legend Ferenc Puskas, who set the bar incredibly high in his final appearance for the club in 1966.

It means that Modric has broken a record that stood for an incredible 58 years.

The Croatian star came off the bench during the second half of the LaLiga clash with Celta Vigo, replacing Fede Valverde in the 63rd minute of the game.

It didn’t take him long to make an impact either, slotting a pass perfectly into the path of Vinicius Jr who slotted home for Real Madrid.

The Brazilian forward’s goal put the Spanish giants 2-1 up after Kylian Mbappe‘s first-half opener was canceled out by Williot Swedberg.

Modric started his career with Dinamo Zagreb before joining Tottenham for £16.5million in 2008.

After four years in north London, Modric moved to Real Madrid in the summer of 2012 for a fee worth £30million.

Since then he’s firmly established himself as a club legend.

Modric has made 548 appearances for Real Madrid, scoring 39 times for the club and providing 90 assists.

In that time the midfielder has helped the club to four LaLiga titles, along with two Copa del Rey crowns.

Luka Modric’s Real Madrid record

Appearances: 548

Goals: 39

Assists: 90

La Liga trophies: 4

Copa del Rey trophies: 2

Champions League trophies: 6

Ballon d’Or wins: 1 (2018)

He’s also played his part in six Champions League successes, including this year’s win over Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.

As well as helping Croatia to finish as runners up and third-place finishers in the World Cup in 2018 and 2022 respectively, Modric also won the Ballon d’Or in 2018.

Modric has less than a year remaining on his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu, but given his impact on the first team, there’s every chance that he will get to extend his stay in Madrid.
