Lyon vs Eintracht Frankfurt predictions
There was not much for their fans to cheer about early on, as Pierre Sage’s side lost their first two Ligue 1 encounters. After five top-flight games, they had just one win to their name and sat 14th in the table.
Worse was still to come. Last month an extraordinary ruling stipulated that Lyon will be relegated to the second tier of French football unless there is a significant improvement in the club’s financial situation.
Lyon are not permitted to sign any new players in January, while they must take steps to reduce their wage bill too. With debts of around €500m, things are not looking good for the seven-time French champions.
Yet despite their off-field predicament, Lyon have turned things around on the pitch. They are now up to fifth in Ligue 1 after a nine-match unbeaten run.
Since a 2-1 triumph over Toulouse at the end of September, no team in the division has collected more points than Lyon. No one should write them off against reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain this weekend.
Before then, Lyon will do battle with Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League. Sage’s men are doing well in this competition too. After five rounds of fixtures they are seventh in the standings, with a top-eight finish sufficient to advance directly to the round of 16.
This is not a straightforward assignment, though. Frankfurt are third in the table with four wins and a draw. No one in the competition has a better points tally.
Frankfurt won this tournament under Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner in 2022, beating Rangers on penalties in the final. That experience should stand them in good stead this term.
In addition to their European exploits, Frankfurt are excelling back home. Only table-topping Bayern Munich are above them in the Bundesliga as the winter break approaches. Frankfurt are right in the mix for Champions League qualification.
A victory here would edge either Lyon or Frankfurt closer to a top-eight finish with two rounds of matches remaining. Both teams are in fine form, so this promises to be one of the most entertaining encounters on matchday six of the Europa League.

Eintracht Frankfurt have only lost twice in the Bundesliga and Europa League in 2024/25.
They kicked off their domestic campaign with a 2-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund, while in October they suffered a slender 2-1 defeat by Bayer Leverkusen.
Generally, though, Frankfurt have been tough to beat. Bayern Munich did not manage it in the Bundesliga; neither did Viktoria Plzen, RFS, Slavia Prague or Midtjylland in continental competition.

One could argue that Frankfurt have not had the toughest set of games in this tournament so far, but their Bundesliga record shows they are playing at a high standard.
So too are Lyon, who also have home advantage behind them on Thursday. But Frankfurt are a resilient outfit and they can at least avoid defeat at the Groupama Stadium.

Eintracht Frankfurt have won both of their away games in the Europa League this season, but they did not manage to keep a clean sheet in either encounter.
They will struggle to do so here as well. Lyon have found the back of the net in 14 of their last 15 fixtures across all competitions. It is not easy for anyone to shut down their attack.
The French side’s five games in Europe have contained a total of 17 goals, or 3.4 per 90 minutes. The equivalent figure for Frankfurt is 15 goals, or three per game.
Both teams will be going for the win on Thursday night and the evidence suggests attacks will get the better of defences.

Omar Marmoush to score any time
If he is honest, even Omar Marmoush would admit he did not see this coming.
The Egypt international has been one of the surprises of the season across Europe. He scored a respectable 17 goals in 41 games for Frankfurt in 2023/24.
Just a few months into the current campaign, he has already matched that tally. Marmoush has notched 13 goals in as many Bundesliga appearances, plus one in the DFB-Pokal and three in the Europa League.
Marmoush is certainly not Frankfurt’s only threat and it would be a mistake for Lyon to neglect their other attackers.
Having said that, there is no doubt that the Egyptian is Frankfurt’s most likely scorer on Thursday.
