Lyon vs PSG predictions

After a run of five matches without a win, Lyon decided to part ways with Pierre Sage at the end of January.

Sage left the club in sixth place in Ligue 1. But it wasn’t just the league form that cost him his job, the horrendous Coupe de France defeat to fifth-tier Bourgoin-Jallieu also played a part in his dismissal.

Former Lille manager Paulo Fonseca was appointed as new head coach on January 31st. The match against PSG will be his fourth game in charge.

Life under Fonseca got off to a losing start. Les Gones lost 3-2 to Marseille in the Choc des Olympiques, with Luis Henrique scoring the decisive 85th-minute winner to settle a crazy five-goal second half.

But since that setback, Lyon has won two from two. They started off with a 4-0 home win over Reims on Matchday 21, Fonseca’s first match in front of his home fans. They then defeated Montpellier 4-1 on the road on Matchday 22 last Sunday.

Fonseca took over Lyon in sixth place, which is where they started the current match week. Les Gones have 36 points from 22 matches.

At the beginning of the weekend, they were four points outside the Champions League places, so there is still plenty left to play for this season.

PSG have been on fire in recent weeks. They sit top of Ligue 1 with 56 points from 22 matches. A fourth successive league title looks inevitable.

The French league leaders were already in fine form ahead of their Matchday 7 Champions League win over Manchester City.

But their second-half comeback against City seems to have turbo-charged their season. Luis Enrique’s team look like they’ve upped their level further since that four-goal second-half blitz against the English champions.

Stade Reims held the league leaders to a 1-1 draw at the Parc des Princes the following weekend. But since then, PSG have been dominant, winning their next seven in all competitions.

PSG warmed up for the showdown against Lyon with a 7-0 demolition of Brest in the Champions League playoffs on Wednesday night.

Lyon vs PSG betting tips

PSG are on fire at the moment, see if Lyon can stop them in their tracks in our Ligue 1 betting tips:

PSG to win

PSG’s Champions League qualification is now assured, meaning Luis Enrique can turn his attention back to Ligue 1.

The Parisians started the match week ten points clear of second-placed Marseille, and they are now 1/250 to lift the title.

If Luis Enrique is going to tinker with his squad, it will likely be on the weekends ahead of Champions League matches. So with a cup game against fourth-tier Stade Briochin all that’s on the horizon this Wednesday, expect Enrique to go for the kill against Lyon.

We expect PSG to win.

If you want to combine this bet with both teams to score, you will get better odds of 8/5. But with Lyon having struggled prior to the arrival of Fonseca, we are playing safe and just backing PSG to win.

The odds of 77/100 are more than reasonable.

Over 3.5 goals

Lyon’s record of ten goals in their last three matches sounds impressive.

But then you see that PSG has scored 26 goals in their last seven matches, including the ten against Brest in the two legs of their Champions League qualifiers.

It seems safe to say that both teams are in good goal-scoring form. Might that prompt a change of tactics from either manager to try and cancel the other team out? Maybe.

But from the evidence we have seen in recent weeks, this match is likely to have goals.

Ousmane Dembele to score anytime

Ousmane Dembele’s goal-scoring exploits have contributed to much of PSG’s recent good form.

The 27-year-old has been outstanding in recent weeks, scoring 11 goals in his last seven Ligue 1 matches and six in his last four Champions League fixtures.

That run includes the 27 minutes Dembele played from the bench in last Saturday’s 1-0 win over Toulouse. He was left out of the starting XI to save him for the Champions League match against Brest.

Luis Enrique need not have bothered. Remarkably, Dembele wasn’t one of the scorers in the 7-0 win. He was substituted off after an hour with Paris already 3-0 ahead on the night and the tie already over.

This means the in-form striker with 17 goals in his last 11 matches is nice and fresh for Lyon.
