Malmo vs Rangers predictions

Until last month, Rangers held out hope that they would be competing in the Champions League this season. But a defeat by Dynamo Kyiv in the qualifiers dropped them down into the Europa League, a tournament whose final they reached in 2022.

Rangers drew with Dynamo away from home in the first leg, potentially giving them the edge midway through the tie. However, they went down 2-0 at home to the Ukrainian outfit, who scored twice late on after Jefte had seen red for Rangers shortly after half-time.

It was a disappointing outcome for the Gers, but they have a better chance of reaching the knockout phase of the Europa League than they did the Champions League.

To advance to the round of 16 directly, they will need to finish in the top eight of the new-look league phase. Those sides that are between ninth and 24th in the table after eight rounds of matches will go forward to the knockout phase play-offs.

Rangers may struggle to secure a top-eight berth given the competition in Europe’s secondary tournament, but they would be disappointed to miss out on the play-offs.

However, the draw was not overly kind to Philippe Clement’s team, who will face Malmo, Lyon, FCSB, Olympiacos, Nice, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Union Saint-Gilloise between now and the end of January.

That represents a tough set of opponents for the Scottish giants, who will probably need at least three wins to guarantee their continued participation in the tournament beyond the league phase.

Rangers have had, at best, a mixed start to the season up to now. Although they have taken 10 points from the other 12 on offer, the Gers lost the first Old Firm derby of 2024/25, going down 3-0 to Celtic at Parkhead.

Despite recently returning to Ibrox after renovation work on their home ground was completed, Rangers could do with another pick-me-up. That loss to Celtic emphasised the fact that the Hoops are well clear of their arch-rivals right now.

A victory over Malmo would not change that, but it would give Rangers fans something to cheer on matchday one of the Europa League.

Malmo and Rangers will do battle in the first set of Europa League fixtures on Thursday.

Rangers to win

You do not often see opening encounters like this one described as ‘must win’, but many Rangers fans feel that is an accurate description of their upcoming assignment.

Malmo are no pushovers, but on paper this is one of the easier fixtures Rangers will contest in the Europa League.

With tricky tests against Nice, Tottenham and Manchester United awaiting in the second half of the league phase, it is important that Rangers get as many points on the board as possible early on.

Malmo are top of their domestic league as things stand, but one advantage Rangers might have is that the Swedish season runs from March to November, with only a few weeks off over the summer.

Rangers should be fresher than their hosts and that could help them grind out a win in Sweden.

Both teams to score

Rangers have conceded four goals in their five Premiership matches up to now, while they kept a clean sheet in a 3-0 victory over Dundee in the League Cup last time out.

It will be tougher to frustrate Malmo on Thursday, though. The Swedish outfit will be in a confident mood after opening up an 11-point lead at the summit of the standings back home.

Malmo have scored eight goals in their last two home games, which makes up for a patchy recent record on the road.

Rangers are still searching for the right blend and balance at the start of this campaign, with Clement coming under pressure as his side sit third in the Premiership table.

Playing a game in which they are not overwhelming favourites to win may actually suit Rangers, especially going forward.

Tom Lawrence to score any time

You have to scroll some way down the anytime scorer market to find the name of Tom Lawrence, who will not necessarily be a popular pick.

Nevertheless, we believe it could be worth a small flutter on Lawrence finding the back of the net when Rangers head to Malmo.

For starters, he is guaranteed to be in the starting XI provided he is fit. Bear in mind, too, that the Welshman has scored twice in five Premiership appearances so far this term.

Only Cyriel Dessers, the centre-forward, is averaging more shots in the league for Rangers, which demonstrates that Lawrence is getting himself into dangerous positions.

That bodes well for Thursday evening and beyond.
