One horrific video on social media shows the vehicle colliding with numerous Liverpool supporters before eventually coming to a halt.

Images captured someone being taken away on a stretcher while a man was seen walking with his arm around a police officer for support.

Footage showed police cordons in place around the heavily littered road, with a large police presence, ambulances and a fire engine also at the scene.

“We are currently dealing with reports of an RTC in Liverpool city centre,” a statement from Merseyside Police read.

“We were contacted at just after 6pm today, Mon 26 May, following reports a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street. The car stopped at the scene and a male detained.”

North West Ambulance service also said: “NWAS is supporting an incident in Liverpool city centre, following reports of a road traffic collision.

“We are currently assessing the situation and working with other members of the emergency services.

“Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible.

“Updates will be published on this page and Mersey Police as we know more.”

“We are currently liaising with Merseyside Police regarding an incident on Water Street in the city centre,” Liverpool City Council added. “Updates to follow.”

Prime Minister Keir Starmer later said on X: “The scenes in Liverpool are appalling — my thoughts are with all those injured or affected.

“I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident.

“I’m being kept updated on developments and ask that we give the police the space they need to investigate.”

Liverpool Riverside MP Kim Johnson, whose seat includes the city centre, said: “I sincerely hope all those involved are safe and get home to their loved ones soon.”

A spokesman for Liverpool City Council confirmed the local authority was liaising with police about the incident.

Thousands of Liverpool fans would have been in attendance for the parade on Monday.

Councillor John Hughes estimated in excess of one million people were attending, beating the 750,000 present for the 2019 Champions League parade.

It is unclear as to how many people were on Water Street at the same time as the incident.

The number of injuries is also unclear at this time.

Reacting to the horrific incident, former Liverpool player Danny Murphy said on talkSPORT: “I’ve just got a text from my son, who took his daughter, my granddaughter to the parade today so he’s safe. Luckily he had to leave a bit earlier because she’s only three.

“I know quite a few other people who were there so I need to do some phoning around just to check.

“I know at least half a dozen people, maybe more.

“Horrendous, what can you say? It beggars belief. There’s no point hypothesising about who and why because that’s just non-nonsensical.

“What possesses someone to do that? I just hope there are no fatalities.”

Monday’s incident will have marred what was a celebratory day for Liverpool after their Premier League title win.

They finished ten points clear of second-placed Arsenal with a 1-1 draw at home to Crystal Palace on the final day of the season.
