Manchester City and Chelsea will be meeting for the second time in four days on Wednesday night as they compete in the first leg of their Champions League quarter final in Manchester.
The meeting comes just a few days after the two sides contested the League Cup final in Derby, in which Chelsea ran out out 2-1 winners, extending their current unbeaten run to 31 matches in all competitions dating all the way back to May last season.
Sonia Bompastor has hit the ground running in west London since taking over from Emma Hayes as Chelsea manager, so far unbeaten in her time with the Blues, with silverware under her belt already and with an eight point lead at the top of the Women’s Super League.
The Champions League is the one trophy that has evaded Chelsea in their recent period of dominance, hiring Bompastor on the basis that she’s won the competition twice as a player and once as a manager Lyon.
The Blues have started their bid for a first ever Champions League title well, winning all six of the group stage matches, finishing comfortably top of Group B ahead of Real Madrid, Twente and Celtic.
Manchester City will be looking to get back to winning ways after their defeat in the League Cup final on Saturday lunchtime which ended their six game unbeaten run in all competitions.
Interim manager Nick Cushing has returned to the club until the end of the season for his second spell at Manchester City following his sacking from New York City in November, with Saturday’s final his first game back in charge of the club.
The Citizens are looking to reach the semi finals of the Champions League for the first time in seven years, but despite winning five of their six group stage matches, only managed to finish second in Group D behind two-time defending champions Barcelona.
Chelsea have won each of their last three matches against Manchester City ahead of Wednesday’s first leg.
