Manchester United almost missed out on European qualification last season.
An eighth-place finish in the Premier League (their lowest ever since the division’s rebrand in 1992) was not enough to even scrape into the Conference League.
However, the FA Cup final provided United with a second bite at the cherry – and they did not pass up the opportunity. A 2-1 victory over Manchester City not only gave Erik ten Hag’s team the trophy, but it also booked them a place in the Europa League.
Europe’s secondary competition has undergone the same revamp as the Champions League. The old group stage is now gone, replaced by a 36-team league phase in which each side will play against eight different opponents.
The top eight in the table will advance automatically to the round of 16, while those ranked between ninth and 24th will contest the knockout phase play-offs.
Another significant change is that no Champions League teams will drop into the Europa League as before. The winner of this competition will thus come from the group of 36 that takes to the field for matchday one this week.
United are among the favourites; the bookies rank them second, behind only Tottenham Hotspur.
As well as Twente, United will face Porto, Fenerbahce, PAOK, Bodo/Glimt, Viktoria Plzen, Rangers and FCSB over the next few months. Ten Hag’s team will be targeting a top-eight finish, thus avoiding a two-legged play-off in February.
Needless to say, anything less than three points on Wednesday would be a disappointing outcome for United, who could do with a positive response after drawing 0-0 with Crystal Palace last time out.
The Red Devils dominated the first hour of that game but failed to take their chances. They then faded badly in the last 30 minutes, when Palace came on strong.
United remain a work in progress in their third campaign under Ten Hag. Unless the Dutchman delivers this term, he is likely to be out of a job by the summer. Tournaments like the Europa League are thus doubly important for the United head coach.

Manchester United will be looking to kick-start their continental campaign with a victory here.

Twente finished third in the Eredivisie last season. They did not really get close to the top two of PSV or Feyenoord, but it was still their best finish since 2013/14 when they also ranked third.
They have made a decent start to the current campaign, not least in attack – only PSV can better their return of 12 goals in six games to date. In their last outing at the weekend, they hit five goals past Almere City.

But the Europa League is a huge step up and Twente will not find it easy to penetrate United’s backline in this one.
Ten Hag’s side have looked more secure at the back of late, aided by the omission of Casemiro in midfield and the centre-back partnership of Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez.

Manchester United are third in the expected goals table in the Premier League, with the data suggesting that only Manchester City and Liverpool have created better chances so far.
There is still an issue of conversion at United, who were especially wasteful in the aforementioned goalless draw with Crystal Palace.
Joshua Zirkzee is still finding his feet, Bruno Fernandes is not in top form, and Amad Diallo is exciting but inconsistent with his final ball.
However, if United continue creating opportunities the goals will soon begin to flow. Twente will struggle to contain their hosts if things start to click in the final third for United.

Marcus Rashford to score any time
Much was made of Ten Hag’s decision to leave Marcus Rashford out of his starting XI for the game against Crystal Palace.
The Dutchman said before the game that the England international was on the bench due to “rotation”, but many wondered whether something else was going on.
It seems like that was not the case, though, and Rashford is expected to return to the starting XI for the home game against Twente.
The forward has had a decent start to 2024/25, scoring once against Southampton in the Premier League and twice against Barnsley in the EFL Cup.
Rashford will now turn his attention to Twente in the Europa League.
