Matia Lule named new Uganda Hippos head coach

FUFA has appointed oMatia Lule as the Uganda Hippos (U20 Men’s National Football Team) head coach. The decision comes ahead of the AFCON U20 CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers slated for next month in Tanzania.

Lule replaces Morley Byekwaso who is currently the head coach at SC Villa and guided the Hippos to two continental finals in recent years.

It should be noted that Lule has previously served as a national team coach in different roles.

He was head coach for the Uganda U17 (The Cubs) in 2014, The Hippos in 2018 and also served as Uganda Cranes assistant under Sebastien Desabre.

Last season, Lule was serving as an assistant coach at Tanzania Premier League outfit Ihefu SC alongside Fred Kajoba (RIP).

He will be assisted by Simeon Massa while Steven Billy Kiggundu and Noah Kasule ‘Babadi’ will serve as goalkeeping coach and fitness trainer respectively.

Lule has coached at KCCA FC, Express FC, Proline FC, Entebbe FC, Stand FC, Mbeya City and Singida Big Stars among others.

Uganda is pitted in Group B alongside South Sudan, Burundi and Ethiopia.
