Millwall v Dagenham prediction
Millwall head into their home FA Cup tie against local rivals Dagenham as overwhelming favourites, being three divisions higher than their non-league opponents, but will have to put an end to their current run of one win in 11 matches in order to see themselves through to round four.
Alex Neil took over as the new Millwall manager on the penultimate day of 2024 following Neil Harris’ surprise departure, but has picked up only one point from his two games in charge since taking over at the Den.
The Lions occupied a place in the Championship play-offs following a 1-0 win over Leeds in November, which their one win in their 11 matches since has seen the east London side drop down to 14th in the league standings.
Millwall have lost three of their last four matches at home, now meaning that only two Championship sides have lost more home games in the league than the side from the capital this season.
Dagenham make the short trip across east London as the final non-league side remaining in this season’s FA Cup after fellow National League Tamworth’s run came to a cruel if inspiring extra-time defeat against Tottenham on Sunday lunchtime.
Currently under the caretaker management of Lewis Young following Ben Strevens’ sacking last month, the Daggers currently sit 15th in the National League table, with just four wins in their last seven matches, as well as an impressive 1-1 draw at title chasing Forest Green in their last outing.
Dagenham have already had to play three matches in the FA Cup prior to tonight’s game, which will be Millwall’s first in the competition this season.
The Daggers started out in the qualifying rounds away at seventh tier Leiston, before knocking out EFL opposition in Crewe and Wimbledon, both away from home, in rounds one and two respectively to book their place in tonight’s derby at the Den.
Millwall are strong favourites for victory tonight in spite of their less than impressive recent form, though the visitors will no doubt be well up for an upset at the home of one of their rivals – I expect a 3-1 win for Millwall, though perhaps the game being closer than the scoreline suggests.
The winner of the tie will face an away trip to Championship leaders Leeds in the fourth round.
Millwall v Dagenham betting tips
Macauley Langstaff has made a name for himself scoring in the lower divisions of English football, and after struggling following his big move to the Championship this summer will be eager to get back among the goals against a level of opposition he has proven himself against so often.
The 27-year-old scored 29 goals in League Two last season and 41 in the National League the season before.
The Lions have struggled to find the net this season and are the Championship’s joint lowest scorers up to this point, but their forward line should find many more opportunities to score against a side in the bottom half of the National League.
