Despite granting rights to the stadium for hosting both Afcon and World Cup qualifiers last year, more accomplishments have happened at Mandela National stadium, Namboole as preps to host both CHAN 2024 and Afcon 2027 continue.
The stadium was the only one that had a pass mark of over 80-percent as per CAF latest inspection before the organisers postponed CHAN to August.
A lot has changed at the stadium with extra flood lights of the highest quality added with UPDF confirming addition of extra 100 lights with Namboole having over 240 lights that produce over 12000 lux.
Flood lights have also been extended to the outside training pitch that has also been fenced to avoid interference from fans and with a stand over 1,000 seats put in place.
Back to the main stadium, evacuation points, non-existent before have been put in place totaling to 17 with spectators now safer in case of an emergency.
Previously, the stadium didn’t have a section where disabled football fans can have a chance to watch matches but that has been worked on with an area now, closer to the tartan availed with seats.
An area secured for the Outside Broadcasting (OB) Vans has also been secured and fenced to avoid fans’ interrupting with the broadcasting process of matches.
On the pitch, hybrid technology has been extended to ensure more durability of the playing surface, better pitch recovery after use, improved drainage and consistent usage without damage.
This technology is simply combining natural grass with synthetic fibers and over 200 million will have been spent upon completion of the process.
For the media, a Mixed Zone where the media and journalists’ interface for reactions after matches has been constructed with players and media now protected from fans.
Meanwhile, the Southern Gate that has had several cases of fans climbing over the wall and breaking gates has also been worked out by fencing off the area where tickets are first are verified to avoid crowding at the main gates.
A sharp razor wire has also been added to prevent those irate fans that have always climbed over the wall nearing causing crowd violence on match days.
