Rory McIlroy has revealed what he believes is LIV Golf’s ‘best chance’ of success with their events.

The Saudi-backed golf league remains separate to the PGA Tour as their ongoing dispute continues.

Talks have taken place to heal the divide in the sport but there remains a split between the two tours.

Unlike the PGA Tour, LIV has a unique league structure involving 13 teams.

Players from across those teams play in eight individual stroke play tournaments throughout each season.

The lowest scoring player and lowest combined team score then claims victory at each event.

Meanwhile, a four-round match play knockout Team Championship is then held at the end of the season.

McIlory has now proposed how LIV could use their team format to improve the overall interest in their events.

Speaking ahead of this week’s Genesis Invitational, the world number three explained: “Look, I always felt like LIV’s best chance was to try to replicate their team championship for the teams to go head to head together instead of they all just go out and play and they add their scores up at the end of the day.

“I don’t think that gets people going. But I think when the teams go head to head like they do in their team championship in wherever, Dallas or whenever it was last year, I think that has a possibility of working.

“Instead of that maybe being once a year and then these stroke play events, could you reduce the stroke play events and do more of that a few times a year.

“I think that is a way — because especially if these guys are going to come back and play, I don’t want to say real, they play real golf but more like championship individual golf, then is there more of an opportunity for these teams to go more head to head because I think that makes for a more compelling product, at least in my eyes. I’m just one person.”

McIlroy’s comments come after he admitted this week that Donald Trump could play a key role in unifying the PGA Tour and LIV Golf.

The four-time Major winner believes the president ‘can be influential’ in the negotiations due to his connections after they played a secret round of golf recently.

Meanwhile, McIlroy began his quest for a second PGA Tour title of the year at Torrey Pines on Thursday.

His even opening round of 72 leaves the 35-year-old tied for 14th heading into Friday.

Overnight leader Denny McCarthy sits four shots ahead of McIlroy and a shot clear of nearest challengers Seamus Power and Patrick Rodgers.

McIlroy tees off for his second round at 7.20pm GMT alongside Viktor Hovland and Adam Scott.
