Driver Ronald Sebuguzi missed out on the 2024 national rally championship title, but his team did not lose out at all as the co-driver came out as a national champion.
Sebuguzi was attempting his fourth national rally title, but his second position finish in the weekend’s Hoima rally could only secure him a first runners-up on this year’s championship behind Jas Mangat; the newly crowned champion.
However, the Shell sponsored crew finish in Hoima guaranteed Anthony Mugambwa a maiden national rally title.
Mugambwa joins Mangat to complete the drivers and co-driver’s NRC champions.
Mugambwa’s road to the co-driver championship was clearly paved after Mangat’s change of co-drivers in the championship. That would give Mugambwa maximum points for the category.
Mugambwa who paired with Sebuguzi in 2020 feels fulfilled on attaining the maiden NRC title.
“Becoming a national champion is every competitor’s dream. Now that I am a champion, I feel complete with my motorsport career.”
“But the truth is, this title would have been even better if I had attained it together with my driver. I am certain he is equally happy for me but it would have felt good with the whole team celebrating,” said Mugambwa.
Mugambwa who started the co-driving career in 2010 has called the notes for a number of drivers including Gilbert Balondemu, Albert Ofong, Leila Mayanja, Kepher Walubi, Andrew Desh Kananura among others.
In 2014, he secured a two-wheel drive co-driver title.
“I have had a title before. But the way our sport is, NRC title is more recognised than the rest of the categories we have. That is why I consider this a big achievement,” he added.
Mugambwa confesses that the co -driver’s title could set up two directions for his future.
“This title is either going to open doors for more titles with my driver or a sign for me to start thinking about throwing in the towel and consider other roles in the sport,” he told Kawowo Sports.
Mugambwa further expressed gratefulness for a season well driven with Ronald Sebuguzi.
“My time with Sebuguzi rally team has showed me so many things. First, I can honestly say, that Sebuguzi is among the most organised drivers we have in the country.”
“I felt the title belonged to us this season. But we got unlucky in Masaka which changed everything. Mangat has one of the best cars in the country. But Sebuguzi was ready to push and keep the title hopes high till the last stage. And that’s what God wanted for us. And we are grateful,” he said.
