Mutundwe Diplomats, NSASPA Nsangi in grand finale | 2024-2025 Oldies league

On Sunday, 2nd February 2025, the Oldies League 10th edition 2024/2025 season is coming to a climax at Maroons Stadium, Luzira in Kampala.

The Oldies League was established in 2014 with six (6) Clubs who wanted to keep healthy and creating networks amongst themselves in their later years after having played active soccer.

It’s a registered entity entrusted by FUFA to run the National Oldies Soccer activities.

The pioneer Clubs were Luzira Ex-Players FC, Butabika Oldies FC, Mutungo Ex Internationals FC, Mbuya Oldies FC, Bugolobi EX FC, and Kisugu Ex FC. The pioneer champion was Kisugu Ex FC with Luzira Ex-Players FC coming second.

From the 6 Clubs the number kept increasing each year and in the 10th edition, 27 Clubs registered to participate in the Oldies League.

This has predominantly been a Kampala and the greater Kampala based Clubs tournament which has had over 50 Clubs participating in the League during the years it has been in existence.

However, in this edition, the league also had Busoga Legends Soccer Club joining from Jinja.

The League has a well-organized governance and management structure of highly competent and experienced persons running the various activities because of the passion that they have.

Due to the League, there has been various offshoots platforms being established like the Kampala North Oldies League, Kampala East Oldies League, Jinja Oldies League, Oldies Soccer SACCO, Abakamanyi FC, etc. these have helped to support the oldies in their social and professional lives with the opportunities presented by the existence of the League.

The registered 27 Clubs were grouped into 3 groups in which the top five (5) qualified for the round of 16 and the best 6th placed team to make 16 Clubs for that round.

The winners played in the quarterfinals, and semifinals. The semifinals witnessed Mutundwe Diplomats pipping Old Stars FC Kiteezi by 2-0 and NSASPA Nsangi FC wining 3-2 against Kiwanga Legends FC.

The interesting thing in the finals between Mutundwe Diplomats and NSASPA Nsangi FC, it’s a repeat of the 2022/2023 finals in which Mutundwe Diplomats with their captain Hon. Magogo Moses Hashim lifting the trophy for their first time having failed at the finals the year before.

This is going to be a match not to miss with the star-studded Mutundwe Diplomats.

The likes of Nisteroy Kizito, Wagalaku Dan, Sekabira Michael, Jerome Katende, amongst others who have made the team to be a perennial opponent in the last three straight finales.

Though they will have to go past Twaha Bunkeddeko, the tall lanky leading goal scorer for this season with 17 goals already in his bag with his teammates. NSASPA has in their custody, Mr. Safe Hands, Tumwine Steven, the golden glove winner for the last season who is this year tussling it out with Haruna Magala of Old Stars FC Kiteezi.

The gates open at 8:00 am for the curtain raiser match involving Oldies Soccer SACCO and The Oldies League Select starting at 10:00 am, then the classification match Old Stars FC Kiteezi and Kiwanga Legends kicking off at 12:30 pm before the final match kicking off at 3:00 pm.

The crowning of the champion will be the icing on the cake with other prizes being cash prizes to the top four Clubs, Most Valuable Player, Top Scorer, Best Goalkeeper, most disciplined team. All the 27 Clubs will also receive a certificate of participation and a ball.
