Nairobi City Thunder delivered a historic performance to end City Oilers’ quest for a third consecutive appearance in the Basketball Africa League (BAL).
The tournament hosts secured a 72-62 victory in a thrilling semifinal clash at the Kasarani Indoor Arena in Nairobi on Monday evening.
With this triumph, Nairobi City Thunder became the first Kenyan team to qualify for the prestigious continental stage, etching their name in the books of African basketball.
The Nairobi City Thunder started strong, opening a seven-point lead (18-11) at the end of the first quarter.
They continued to dictate the tempo in the second quarter, slightly extending their advantage to eight points (34-26) by halftime.
City Oilers faced a major setback in the third quarter when key player Titus Lual left the court after suffering an awkward injury.
Despite their efforts to close the gap, the Oilers couldn’t match the intensity of the home team.
The Thunder maintained a nine-point lead (54-45) heading into the final period, fueled by the roaring support of their fans.
Nairobi City Thunder sealed the victory with a balanced team effort. Ater Majok led the charge with 17 points, followed by Uche Iroegbu with 16, Tylor Ongwae with 12, and Garang Diing Akol with 11.
For City Oilers, Parrish Petty (23 points), Falando Jones (15 points), and Israel Oyoro Otobo (12 points) were the only players to score in double digits, but their efforts weren’t enough to overcome the hosts’ dominance.
With this remarkable win, Nairobi City Thunder advanced to the East Division tournament final, where they will face Kriol Star in a bid for the ultimate glory.
