What an impact Antonio Conte has had at Napoli.
The Italian rarely wastes any time in making his mark at a new club, but even by his standards his start at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona has been hugely impressive.
A 2-0 victory over AC Milan in the midweek round of Serie A fixtures kept Napoli at the summit of the standings after 10 games.
Since suffering a shock 3-0 defeat by Hellas Verona on matchday one, Napoli have been close to perfect. They have won eight of their nine encounters since then, the exception being a creditable 0-0 away draw with Juventus.
Before Tuesday night, the critique levelled at Napoli was that the early fixture list had been kind. Aside from that trip to Juventus, Conte’s charges had mostly had winnable assignments.
But by beating Milan 2-0 at San Siro, Napoli showed they are the real deal. First-half goals from Romelu Lukaku and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put the visitors in a commanding position at the interval, and Napoli held on reasonably comfortably thereafter.
There is a long way to go this term, but Napoli fans could not have asked for a better response to that surprise setback against Verona on the opening weekend.
Conte has already built the team in his image. Interestingly, he is not using the back three with which he has been associated for most of his managerial career.
Conte is instead lining his team up in a 3-4-3 formation. Other hallmarks of a Conte side are present, though: intensity with and without the ball, disciplined defensive organisation, and quick transitions when space is available.
Napoli finished a mammoth 41 points behind Inter in top spot last season. After that loss to Verona, it looked like Conte might need a year to bed in with the Partenopei.
Right now, though, a genuine title tilt looks probable. Inter and Juventus also have their eye on the prize, but Napoli will take some stopping if they continue to build up a head of steam.
“There is a positive atmosphere and this gives me so much energy, so much enthusiasm and so much responsibility,” Conte said after the Milan triumph. That is ominous for the rest of the division.

Napoli and Atalanta will battle it out in the early Serie A fixture on Sunday.

Atalanta are also in fantastic form. Following victories over Genoa (5-1), Venezia (2-0) and Verona (6-1), Gian Piero Gasperini’s team extended their winning run to four games in midweek, beating Monza 2-0.
After an iffy start to the campaign, Atalanta are now up into third place. Gasperini continues to work wonders in Bergamo.
Needless to say, though, Napoli will provide a much sterner test than any of Genoa, Venezia, Verona and Monza managed.

What is more, Atalanta’s away record so far this season is nothing to write home about: they have won just one of their last four matches at opposition stadiums in Serie A.
Napoli have the bit between their teeth and we like their chances of triumphing again on Sunday.

Napoli’s success so far this season has been built on a rock-solid backline which has been breached by opponents on just five occasions.
Three of those concessions came in that defeat by Verona, so Napoli have averaged just 0.22 goals against per 90 minutes in their last nine matches. They have also kept seven clean sheets this term.
However, an eighth shut-out could be beyond them against Atalanta, who have consistently been one of Italy’s most attack-minded teams under Gasperini.
Atalanta have scored 26 goals in their 10 outings, easily the most in the league. They also lead the way for expected goals and shots.
Napoli will have to fight fire with fire this weekend.

Romelu Lukaku to score any time
Not for the first time Conte is getting the best out of Lukaku, a player with whom he shares a strong relationship.
Stepping into Victor Osimhen’s shoes was not an easy task, but Lukaku knows exactly what Conte wants from him and has thus been able to settle in quickly.
Mateo Retegui of Atalanta is Serie A’s top scorer as things stand and many will consider backing him to make the net bulge in Naples.
But Lukaku has now settled in at the Maradona and Atalanta will have their hands full in trying to keep him quiet.
In our view, the Belgian will add his name to another Serie A scoresheet when Napoli face Atalanta this weekend.
