NEC dim lights out of Stars to go top

NEC FC moved top of the summit in the Uganda Premier League after overcoming Soltilo Bright Stars FC on Wednesday.

In the game played under the floodlights at MTN-Omondi Stadium, NEC FC had to dig deep to secure a 1-0 win.

Paul Mucureezi who has been in fine form for the Die Hards scored the all important goal of the game, converting from the spot in the second half.

Bright Stars on the other hand will rue the chances got on the day including captain Nelson Senkatuka missing a penalty at the stroke of halftime.

The game was closely contested right from the start with either side having chances at goal.

Muzamiru Mutyaba nearly gave NEC FC the lead in the 11th minute but his goal-bound effort was cleared.

In the 39th minute, Soltilo Bright Stars were awarded a penalty when defender Patrick Bayiga held the ball in the area.

Senkatuka was tasked to take the penalty for the visitors but he slipped before taking his shot and the effort was saved by goalkeeper Hannington Ssebwalunyo.

With 15 minutes left, NEC FC got a penalty which was converted by Mucureezi and this eventually became the decisive moment of the game.

The win takes NEC FC top of the table on 26 points, two above second placed Vipers SC who play BUL FC on Saturday.

Soltilo Bright Stars FC on the other remain bottom of the table on six points.
