Newcastle United vs Arsenal predictions
We are only nine games into the 2024/25 Premier League season and there has already been much debate about Arsenal’s title credentials.
Runners-up in the last two campaigns, the Gunners are desperate to finish on top of the pile for the first time since Arsene Wenger’s side went unbeaten in 2003/04.
There have been a few ups and downs so far. Arsenal head into the weekend in third place, five points adrift of Manchester City in top spot.
The Gunners have won impressively away to Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur, but they were recently beaten 2-0 by Bournemouth having previously dropped points in a frustrating 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion.
The two matches that generated the most talking points were those in which Arsenal faced Manchester City and Liverpool. Both ended with the score level.
In the first, Arsenal were leading City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium when Leandro Trossard was sent off on the stroke of half-time.
Mikel Arteta’s men then spent the second half in all-out-defence mode. They almost held out for all three points, only for John Stones to break their hearts late on.
Given their numerical disadvantage on that occasion, it was understandable that Arsenal attempted to shut up shop. Their decision to try and protect a slender lead against Liverpool last weekend was harder to understand despite their various injury problems.
Arsenal are strong defensively, but it is never wise to cede the initiative to top teams. That is what they did against Liverpool after dominating the first half – and it ultimately proved costly.
Arsenal breezed to a 3-0 victory over Preston North End in the EFL Cup in midweek, and they will now be looking to return to winning ways in the top flight.
Arteta’s team lost this match at around the same stage of last season and the Arsenal boss will hope his players have learned from that setback.
As for Newcastle United, they could do with another morale-boosting win after defeating Chelsea 2-0 in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.
The Magpies are in the bottom half of the Premier League right now and they do not want to be there for long.
Newcastle United vs Arsenal betting tips
Arsenal will be looking to keep their Premier League title tilt on track when they face Newcastle United.
Draw
It has been a tough start to the campaign for Newcastle after a summer transfer window that was incredibly frustrating.
A 2-1 loss to Chelsea in the Premier League last weekend means Eddie Howe’s team have emerged triumphant from only three of their nine games to date.
Newcastle cannot really say they have been unlucky either. They rank 10th for expected goals difference, a measure of chance quality at both ends of the field.

But Howe’s team are still capable of giving the big boys a game at St James’ Park. Just ask Manchester City, who could only manage a 1-1 draw away to Howe’s men in September.
The Magpies have only lost one of their last 14 games in front of their own fans. Arsenal may have to settle for a point this weekend.
Choose a draw at 13/5 with Paddy Power
Arsenal to score first
The St James’ Park crowd is crucial to the way Newcastle play. Howe demands intensity and energy from his players, and it is much easier to produce that sort of performance when your supporters are roaring you on.
Crowds tend to be a little quieter than usual in 12.30pm kick-offs, however, and Arsenal are adept at quietening down rival fans.
Bear in mind, too, that the Gunners have broken the deadlock in six of their nine matches in 2024/25, whereas Newcastle have conceded the first goal in six of their nine outings.
Howe’s team have been slow starters this term and it could take a while for them to get going on Saturday.
Arsenal can draw first blood in gameweek 10’s curtain-raising contest.

Bukayo Saka to score or assist
Arsenal were sweating over Bukayo Saka’s fitness ahead of the Liverpool game last weekend.
Despite limited training time in the run-up to that crunch clash, Saka was included in the starting XI.
You would not have been able to tell he had been suffering with an ailment. Saka was superb, scoring a wonderful opening goal and providing a constant threat thereafter.
The England international is as reliable as they come. You can count on one hand the number of poor performances he has turned in for club and country.
With three strikes and seven assists, Saka has had a direct hand in 10 goals this term – more than anyone but Cole Palmer, Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah. He will no doubt have his say against Newcastle too.
Select a goal or assist for Bukayo Saka at 6/5 with Paddy Power
