Newcastle United vs Chelsea predictions

So, we meet again.

Just three days after Chelsea played Newcastle United in the Premier League, the duo will face off again in the EFL Cup. Newcastle fans will be hoping for a better outcome this time around.

Chelsea ran out 2-1 winners at Stamford Bridge at the weekend. Nicolas Jackson gave the hosts the lead, before Alexander Isak bundled in an equaliser later in the first half.

Both teams had chances to score the decisive third goal, but it was Cole Palmer who made himself the match-winner to move Chelsea within a point of the top four.

Newcastle, for whom Champions League qualification is also the principal objective in 2024/25, now find themselves 12th in the table. Whisper it, but Eddie Howe is starting to come under a little bit of pressure at St James’ Park.

In fairness to the manager, he was not responsible for an underwhelming transfer window in which Newcastle failed to land their top target in Marc Guehi, despite spending most of the summer chasing the Crystal Palace and England centre-back.

Lloyd Kelly and William Osula were the only two major outfield additions to Howe’s squad, and neither player makes Newcastle’s first-choice XI.

Standing still at the top end of the Premier League is akin to going backwards. So although Newcastle succeeded in keeping hold of Isak, Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes despite interest from elsewhere, they have been overtaken by others in the race for Champions League football.

To many fans, a trophy is more important than a top-four finish. Newcastle, who were EFL Cup runners-up the season before last, are without a major prize since 1955.

That is a staggering drought for a club of their size. A place in the quarter-finals is up for grabs on Wednesday, but Chelsea will also be keen to reach the last eight having finished as runners-up in this tournament last term.

Enzo Maresca has enjoyed a broadly positive start to his Chelsea tenure. The Blues had a chaotic summer in terms of transfers, but in hindsight there seems to have been a method in their madness. Things are looking up at Stamford Bridge, if not particularly at St James’ Park.

Newcastle United vs Chelsea betting tips

Can Newcastle United get revenge on Chelsea as the two teams face off for the second time in the space of a few days?

Chelsea to win the tie

One of Newcastle’s main problems is a relative lack of depth outside the starting XI.

Take Sunday’s match in west London. On 68 minutes Newcastle brought on Joe Willock, Jacob Murphy and Sean Longstaff in a bid to change the game. All three are decent Premier League players, but it is not really a trio that strikes fear into the hearts of opponents.

By way of contrast, Chelsea introduced Mykhailo Mudryk, Enzo Fernandez, Marc Cucurella and Christopher Nkunku off the bench.

With both managers likely to shuffle their packs here, Chelsea’s superior strength in depth could win the day.

Hedge your bets by tipping the Blues to win the tie rather than necessarily triumphing in 90 minutes.

Back Chelsea to win at 98/100 with Midnite

Newcastle to score under 1.5 goals

Newcastle have had a problem with putting the ball in the back of the net so far this season.

In the Premier League, only Manchester United, Crystal Palace and Southampton have scored fewer goals than Howe’s side after nine rounds of fixtures. In the EFL Cup, Newcastle scored just once against each of Nottingham Forest and Wimbledon.

Isak has been significantly below his brilliant best, while Gordon, who missed the weekend game through injury, has blown hot and cold.

Of their 11 outings in all competitions, Newcastle have scored one or zero goals in nine of them. They have averaged exactly one per game so far.

Chelsea do not have the most rock-solid backline in the country, but Newcastle’s scoring woes could continue on Wednesday.

Christopher Nkunku to score any time

Given how bloated Chelsea’s squad is, Maresca has done the right thing in settling a favoured XI and not deviating too much from it.

In the EFL Cup and the Conference League, however, he has given Chelsea’s many fringe members a chance to impress.

Nkunku has tended to make the most of those opportunities. He has scored seven goals across the two cup competitions, making him the club’s top scorer across the board.

He also takes penalties when Palmer, who is likely to be rested here, is not out on the pitch.

Nkunku only played for 12 minutes plus stoppage time on Sunday, but he should be a much more prominent figure at St James’ Park.

Tip Christopher Nkunku to score any time at 21/10 with Midnite/20 with bet365
