Attention will be on the top five of the Premier League when Newcastle and Chelsea meet in a high noon showdown at St. James’ Park on Sunday.

Both teams are level on points going into the Matchday 36 clash, and with only two matches remaining after, this fixture promises to go a long way to deciding who will finish in the Champions League positions.

Newcastle Utd vs Chelsea predictions

Newcastle have been in strong form lately, the Toon Army have collected 16 points from their last seven Premier League games.

Eddie Howe’s team have secured impressive home wins over Brentford (2-1), Manchester United (4-1), Crystal Palace (5-0), and Ipswich (3-0) in recent weeks.

On the road things haven’t been as good. The Magpies went down 4-1 at Aston Villa on Matchday 33 and last Sunday they could only manage a 1-1 draw at Brighton.

The solitary point gained on the south coast kept Eddie Howe’s team level on points with Chelsea.

Both teams have 63 points from 35 matches, making Sunday’s clash at St. James’ Park crucial in the race for a Champions League spot.

Chelsea are unbeaten in their last six Premier League matches, earning 14 points with wins over Liverpool (3-1), Everton (1-0), and Fulham (2-1). They are on a winning streak of three in the league and five in all competitions.

As well as remaining in contention for a top-five finish, the Blues have also reached the Europa Conference League final after a 5-1 aggregate victory over Djurgarden in the semi-final.

In a further boost to Enzo Maresca, Cole Palmer ended his goal drought with a penalty in the win over Liverpool last Sunday.

And with the Conference League final against Real Betis not taking place until May 28th, his team now have plenty of time to focus on the Premier League.

Newcastle vs Chelsea betting tips

The bookies are expecting this to be tight. Newcastle are the 11/10 favourites, but with so much at stake, all three outcomes look possible. A Chelsea win is 21/10 and the draw is 27/10. Our match betting tips follow:

Newcastle to win or draw and over 2.5 goals

With the top of the Premier League so tight, Newcastle have to win their remaining two home games at the very least if they want to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

But, Chelsea also needs the points just as badly. Unlike Eddie Howe – who has silverware on the mantelpiece this season, Enzo Maresca could be out of job if his team fails to make the top five.

All this brings the draw into the equation, and it also makes goals at both ends more likely.

Newcastle have scored 19 goals in their last seven matches. There have also been over 2.5 goals scored in the last eleven Premier League fixtures at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle to score in both halves

Newcastle have scored in both halves of their last four matches at St. James’ Park. The Magpies are away to Arsenal in their next match, so will feel they have to beat Chelsea.

Roared on by a ferocious home crowd, we can see Eddie Howe’s team going all out for the win. And with a goal from Chelsea more than likely, the Black and Whites may be required to score in both halves if they are to claim all three points.

Cole Palmer to score anytime

Cole Palmer looked more like his old self in last Sunday’s 3-1 win over Liverpool.

The former Manchester City midfielder capped off a fine performance with a 96th-minute penalty. The goal ended a run of 12 matches without a Premier League goal, a dry spell dating back to January 14th.

Palmer may have only scored from the spot, but it ended a barren run that was clearly playing on his mind. He will now be free of those shackles.

The England man is nearly 2/1 to score again this weekend. Wouldn’t it just be typical of Palmer to back it up with another goal against the Magpies.
