Arsenal make the long trip to Tyneside on Saturday lunchtime as odds on favourites to return to the capital with all three points, having got back to winning ways on Wednesday night with a 3-0 win over Preston which booked their place in the quarter finals of the Carabao Cup.

Mikel Arteta’s side are without a win in their last two Premier League games though, picking up just on point from their last two matches which has seen them lose ground in the battle for what would be their first league title in 21 years.

The north London side head into the weekend third in the table four points behind Liverpool, who earned a 2-2 draw at the Emirates last weekend, and five points off the four-time defending champions Manchester City.

The Gunners suffered their first and, so far, only defeat of the season in any competition in their last away match on the Dorset coast against Bournemouth, and will be determined to get back to winning ways in the north east on Saturday so as to avoid letting their title competitors pull further ahead in the table.

Newcastle head into the weekend looking to put an end to a five-match winless run in the league which has seen them pick up just two points, with back-to-back defeats seeing them drop out into the bottom half of the Premier League table.

Eddie Howe’s side start the weekend in 12th place, though with only goal difference separating them from the top half of the table and are just a point off eighth placed Tottenham.

The Magpies, like Arsenal, managed to book their place in the last eight of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday with a confidence-boosting win over Chelsea which they will hope to build on ahead of a huge game against Arsenal to kick off the Premier League weekend.

Newcastle have won only on the last four meetings with the Gunners, but the side from the capital have lost on two of their last three visits to Tyneside, though Arteta’s 7-2 winning record against the Magpies bodes well for Arsenal on Saturday afternoon.
