Newcastle v Brighton prediction
Newcastle will be looking forward to playing back in front of their home fans this weekend after defeats in back to back away games against Manchester City and Liverpool in the last fortnight has halted their bid for Champions League football next season.
Eddie Howe’s side’s last two home games, in contrast, have come against Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, the teams set second and third in the Premier League table respectively, and both ended in victory for the Geordies.
The Magpies’ defeat at Anfield on Wednesday night leaves them in sixth place in the Premier League table, three points behind fourth placed Manchester City as they bid to qualify for the Champions League for the second time in three years.
The Tyneside club have fared well in cup competitions this season having reached next month’s Carabao Cup final at Wembley, and now looking to reach their second consecutive FA Cup quarter final on Sunday as they seek to end a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy.
Brighton make the long trip coast to coast this weekend having just secured their fourth victory in a row with a 2-1 win over Bournemouth on Tuesday night to lift them back into the top eight.
Fabian Hurzeler’s side now sit just three points behind fifth placed Chelsea and four behind Manchester City in the fourth and final Champions League qualifying position as the south coast side seek also seek European football for a second time in three years.
The Seagulls have lost only one of their last eight matches away from home, and have already won at St James’ Park this season, and make the trip this weekend with four wins in their last five matches on the road.
The Magpies are winless in four of their last five matches against the Seagulls, though Howe has won 11 of his 22 games against the south coast club in his career.
Sunday’s early afternoon Cup tie should prove an intriguing game with Brighton taking a four game win streak to take a Newcastle side who have impressed at home in recent weeks, the result of the tie may hing on the fitness of Magpies striker Alexander Isak – I’m leaning towards 2-2 draw, with Newcastle progressing after extra time.
Newcastle v Brighton betting tips
Brighton’s resurgence in form has coincided with Kaoru Mitoma’s, who has been in sparkling of late, scoring in five of the Seagulls’ last six wins, including the winner in their victory over Chelsea in the round four of this competition to book their place in Sunday’s tie.
One defeat in eight on the road bodes well for the Seagulls but Newcastle’s home record is a strong one, particularly of late, and the Magpies have enjoyed in their runs in domestic cups in recent seasons.
