NFL betting tips: New England Patriots at Jacksonville Jaguars preview and picks for Wembley clash

For a third straight week, there is an NFL game taking place in London as the New England Patriots face the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley.

The Jaguars are frequent visitors to the UK, and they were in action at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last weekend, losing 35-16 to the Chicago Bears.

New England and Jacksonville are 1-5 through the first six weeks of the campaign, and it is unlikely that either team makes the playoffs, but there will still be plenty of passion on show in the capital.

Jags can learn from last week’s mistakes

Doug Pederson’s job is on the line in the coming weeks, with Jacksonville expected to challenge for the playoffs.

They started the season with four consecutive defeats but failed to build on a 37-34 victory over AFC South rivals, the Indianapolis Colts, when losing to the Bears last weekend.

Jacksonville and New England now have the same issue that history suggests their playoff hopes are over, but the Patriots never expected to feature in the postseason.

The Jaguars did, however, and only four teams of the 201 that started with a 1-5 record since 1966 made the playoffs.

However, this weekend’s fixture gives the Jaguars the perfect chance to move a step in the right direction. The Patriots are widely expected to be one of the best candidates to pick first in next year’s draft, and they made several errors against the Bears.

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence saw four of his potential touchdown passes dropped by Gabe Davis, Christian Kirk and Brian Thomas Jr., and if they iron out those issues, there’s every chance they take control.

Jacksonville have also been in London over 10 days longer than the Patriots, so they will have acclimatised to their new environment and know what it takes to perform in London.

No pressure on Maye in London

New England finally handed quarterback Drake Maye a start last week as they lost 41-21 to the Houston Texans.

While Maye was on the losing side and threw two interceptions, he kept his composure and threw three touchdowns to keep his team ticking over.

Maye completed 20 of his 33 passes for 243 yards while he also scrambled for 38 yards on the ground.

This year’s third-overall pick was known for his ability to rush in college for North Carolina. In 2022, he rushed for 698 yards, while last season, he added a further 449 yards on the ground. During his college career, Maye scored 16 touchdowns on the ground and Sunday’s game gives him the chance to impress on the big stage.

Maye’s rushing line should be easily achievable for a quarterback who has a point to prove and is known for using his legs to get out of trouble.
