Nigel Benn was pleased to see his old rival Chris Eubank Sr turn up for his son’s fight with Conor Benn.

The British boxing legend had distanced himself from the domestic dust-up, but stunned the packed-out Tottenham Hotspur Stadium by rocking up on the day of the fight.

Midway through Liam Smith and Aaron McKenna’s undercard bout, the big screen switched to Eubank Sr getting out of a black SUV as the London venue erupted.

And Benn Sr was just as delighted to see his old rival, who he shared a pair of legendary fights with in the early 1990s.

“I wanted him here. It’s a big family affair.”

A lot of Benn’s pre-fight trash talk had been related to Eubank Jr’s fractured relationship with his father.

Asked if Eubank Sr’s attendance had affected his son’s mindset, Nigel replied: “Not at all. It’s not based on Chris.

“I don’t know what Chris is going to turn up tonight.”

Eubank Jr had urged his dad to join him in his corner on fight night.

However, all hope was seemingly dashed when Eubank Sr gave an explosive interview to Seconds Out last week.

“I will not be an accomplice to their stupidity, their circus,” he said.

“It’s against the rules what is happening, 147lbs fighting 160lbs is against the rules,” said Eubank Sr.

“When Kell Brook was made to fight GGG [Gennady Golovkin] it’s against the rules.

“That boy [Brook] had his eye socket smashed. For promoters, it is just a game, but to the warriors, it is a way of life.

“We have to call them what they are, they are trash, they are trashing us. We are not trash, we are the standard bearers…

“If you are not clever and you are not noble, this [boxing] will kill you, this vocation, what they call sport.

“If you don’t play it right already, Conor, you don’t have a career to enjoy.”

Yet after all that, Eubank Sr rocked up and stole the show.
