Nigerian international Ademola Lookman has been named the CAF Player of the Year 2024 following his exploits with the Super Eagles and his Italian club Atalanta.
Lookman who replaces compatriot Victor Osimhen, the award winner last year beat off competition from Afcon winner Simon Adingra, Guinea’s Serhou Guirassy, Achraf Hakimi of Morocco and South Africa’s Ronwen Williams.
The fleet footed winger helped Nigeria reach the final of the Africa Cup Nations where he finished with 3 goals and named in the Afcon XI as well as helped the Italian Serie A side lift the UEFA Europa League scoring a hattrick in the final and was named the player of the competition.
Ronwen Williams of Mamelodi Sundowns and South Africa took home two prizes – the Goalkeeper of the year and Interclub Player of the Year but missed out on the CAF XI with Andre Onana of Cameroon and Manchester United chosen in goal.
In the women category, Zambia’s Barbara Banda was crowned the Women Player of the Year for the second successive year running.
The winners are voted for by a panel of experts which includes members of Caf’s technical committee plus African media professionals, players and coaches.
In the Goal of the Year category, Angolan Cristovao Mabululu won beating Ugandan international Denis Omedi amongst other contestants to the crown purely decided by fans votes.
